A Little Bit About Me...

As a Penn State graduate, I earned a B.S. in Earth Sciences with a minor in Chemistry, assisting a paleoclimatology laboratory on campus for three years. I then enrolled at Bloomsburg University as a graduate student for a M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction, and worked as a graduate assistant. I then completed student teaching at Williamsport Area School District in a high school chemistry class and a middle school science class. I am a certified chemistry teacher for the state of Pennsylvania with all proper clearances and references, including Act 34, 114, 151, and several personal references. My teaching style is more student centered. I believe that involving the students with hands on activities allows them to grasp and understand certain topics easier. Especially in a science classroom where we are studying intangible topics, like the core of the earth, or the stars, or the atmosphere, students may have difficulties understanding these ideas from a strictly lecture based approach to educating. Also I understand that schools are becoming more and more diverse regarding the student body population. This fact means that it is important for me to use multiple types of assessment and teaching methods in the classroom.

I believe that everyone is teachable, if the student has the desire and the teacher has the commitment. I tend to be a patient teacher, with high standards. I actively question the student, which allows me to challenge the student in my presence, where I am able to guide him/her. While I have predominantly tutored college students, I have also taught adults and children.
