A Little Bit About Me...

I hold a bachelor's degree in English writing and possess extensive teaching experience as I have taught every summer since I was an undergraduate. Most recently, I instructed creative writing with the Western Pennsylvania Writing Project through the Young Writers Institute where I taught creative writing workshops at the Cathedral of Learning to middle school students. I have also taught art and writing classes through the Community Arts Center of Cambria County and the Greater Johnstown school district for after-school and summer-school programming. I have been working as a private writing tutor for about two years and primarily teach essay writing, creative writing and reading comprehension. Tutored (recommended by school) fellow classmates elementary though college and various friends and family. Was the type of student that would teach myself and help others that were behind. I work hard to learn about others and help them in the way they need to be helped. Education is a journey and having the right tour guide is the most important part.

I was a cheerleader from 7th grade until my junior year of college at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown where i was a flyer on their competition squad. I also coached a junior rah rah camp throughout high school. I have helped tutor friends’ kids on math from little school to high school. I have taken math all the way up to Differential equations and feel alright tutoring up to calculus one. I do not possess documented experience from schools or other organizations. I am a very highly motivated individual that does not mind helping others. I also have experience in teaching or helping coach little league sports educating kids on how to play games correctly. I have also been an assistant coach and helped out at Clinton Community College with girl’s softball under the head coach.
I like to teach using examples, either on a board to show a person step by step first. Then try to give the student examples to try to solve themselves. If this does not work I continue to breakdown a problem until we can clearly identify where the student is having trouble.

A Little Bit About Me...

I began my study of American Sign Language (ASL) at the tender age of 12, then studied Latin in high school with Mrs. Ellen Conrad. When I reached college, I continued my study of ASL while tutoring friends in Latin. I have studied Arabic and Irish Gaelic at the college level, and dabbled in Spanish, Hawaiian Creole, and various African languages. In addition to learning, I love to teach. I began teaching ASL while I was still a high school student, and continue tutoring friends in ASL and Latin. As a college student, I began teaching and coaching fencing to all age groups, but specifically students in grades 6-12.
My favorite aspect of coaching, teaching, and tutoring is the personal connection I build with my students. As a student, I did not adapt well to traditional educational settings, and so I seek to create a nontraditional environment for my students that involves ki ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Teaching art is one of my favorite ways to apply my abilities. I am particularly passionate about comics and giving children the tools to express themselves through art and self-publishing, skills I hope they apply on their own after I am finished teaching them. I believe in giving children the same respect as adults whenever possible. In my experience, developing an authentic rapport with children is more effective than talking down to them.
I have volunteered teaching grade-school age children in theater at Sweetwater Center for the Arts in Sewickley, PA and teaching creative writing to fifth-grade students at the William H. Ray School in Chicago, IL. I have had paid positions teaching a workshop in comics to middle-school students at Sewickley Academy and teaching drawing and basic self-publishing at an after-school program in West Lebanon, NH. My education at CCS has included n ... read more
