A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in individualized teaching. In my sixth grade classroom, I individualized instruction wherever possible. In reading I tested my students and placed them in books at their reading level. I had them write reading summaries and corrected their first drafts. In sixth weeks, I retested and in most instances moved students to a higher level. In my math classes, I tested students and had them begin at the level that they needed to master. If a student could not add, I had him work on his addition skills. I moved students to the next skill level once they had mastered the level that they were working on. Of course, I did group teaching in my classroom, but I individualized wherever possible.
I taught for twenty five years at the middle school level mostly in a self contained sixth grade classroom. In addition to teaching reading, English, math, science, and social studies, I t ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a accomplished student, I realized I always had help along the help with achieving academic success. From teachers and counselors to my peers and older students. I began to help other with academics as early as the third grade, however I began to commit to tutoring in High School and continue it through-out college, in hopes to eventually becoming a teacher in the future.
I believe anyone can teach a subject, having enough knowledge of a subject allows one to pass it on. However, I feel what many teachers do not do is teach students how to learn. It is in my belief that teaching students to learn enables them to think independently allowing them to become more creative rather than repetitive. So not only do I teach students the subject, I teach them how to learn and apply it to every other subject.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in "Assertive Discipline". This style uses lots of verbal praise, rewards and incentives. It keeps learning on a positive, moving forward track. This style of teaching is never negative. It encourages learning through engaging, age-appropriate, research-based, fun activities. It starts by assessing each child to determine the student's strengths and weaknesses. Then the appropriate materials are gathered to address each area of need. Tests, charts, diagrams, folders, manipulatives, and many other electronic learning tools are used to track progress and build confidence in each student. All children can learn if they are properly motivated, diagnosed, and given the appropriate learning materials.

A Little Bit About Me...

One of the reasons I work as a tutor is because of the freedom it gives me to address each learner’s needs individually; this means not only working with them on issues such as mechanics, grammar and organization, but on what I refer to as the academic “soft skills” such as time management, note taking and various strategies to analyze and articulate an argument as well. I am passionate about making sure struggling students gain the skills they need to reach both their individual goals as well as their academic potential. Having both the skills and knowledge needed to help give those students the tools, strategies and confidence they need to succeed allows me to give back to the very students that inspire me on a regular basis.
As both a graduate student in education as well as a credentialed teacher focusing on literacy, elementary and secondary basic skills, I firmly believe ... read more
