A Little Bit About Me...

My experience as a teacher has shown me the importance of an open mind and a thoughtful response. I believe learning comes out of asking questions. It is the instructor's job to encourage thoughtful questions. To do this, the student must be made to feel at ease around the teacher and confident enough to ask the questions they really need answered to succeed. If a student is ridiculed for asking a "stupid" question there is less chance of that student asking questions in the future and less chance of the student succeeding in a course.
I hold a BS in Chemistry from Utah State University and have completed the requirements for a MS in Chemistry from the University of Oregon. I have taught in public schools, in private schools, with troubled and behavior problem youth, incarcerated youths (13-20 years of age), as well as home-schooled students, small group, and one-on-one. My teaching style is probably best suited to high school and college students. Although I successfully helped my own 3 children through their elementary school, high school and college years, my tutoring experience has been with older students. My wife is a Montessori trained teacher so I have absorbed that method for tutoring. Each student must be viewed as an individual to define the areas of weakness and fill them in. It is only when the student understands the basics of a subject that they can build a future in it.
