My comments on tutoring Marine Biology : Subject that I have taught as an elective subject.

I have a varied style, which is geared to the learning style of my students. I teach world to text, text to text, text to life.
I was employed by the Lakeland Central School District as a substitute Teacher Aide and later in a full time capacity. I worked for the OASIS Program and later at the Alternative High School. After completing my Bachelor's Degree at Concordia College, I applied for and was accepted into the New York City Teaching Fellows Program. I taught Special Education at a high needs urban high school in the Bronx. This was a challenging and rewarding experience. Many of my students continued on to post secondary schools. I am currently finishing my Master's degree program at City College of New York, expected graduation is May 2013.

I would consider my teaching style to be very organic and adaptable. I consider each student individually, and I evaluate what works best for that student in particular. I am trained in various forms of teaching, and I have a complete understanding of the various learning personalities and characteristics of students that I have worked with and will work with in the future.
I began mentoring students during my tenure at Regis High School, a private, full-scholarship-only high school in New York City at the age of 17. After attending Villanova University and Fordham University's Graduate School of Business Administration, I began tutoring part-time with Studypoint. I have tutored over 30 different students in nearly all academic areas, including SAT, ACT, ISEE, SSAT and Academic Programs for grades K-12. I never give up on a child. I also never push a child on any task that are really difficult for him or her. Time and patience is an important factor in teaching and tutoring. More often, as a teacher it is my duty to really know my students and the best way to approach their learning abilities. I have taught in a classroom setting for so many years, and it is sometimes frustrating to teach a concept that the curriculum as mandated by the state must be forced into a child no matter what. It is up to the teacher then to make adjustments, changes and flexible evaluations without watering it down that could be workable across the board. I often do this and the results are more than successful.

I enjoy the learning process. I believe that tutoring is essential to guide students for growth and development of young minds. I love the challenge of finding the roadblocks that hinder learning and make the subject come together for the student. I enjoy seeing a sense of pride in their accomplishment. As a volunteer for NY Cares, I have helped many students feel good about themselves after they have accomplished their goal whatever that may be.
As a graduate student a Johns Hopkins University, I have acquired a love of learning of biology. I also have two academic degrees from Boston University. I have a strong grasp of many of the subcategories in biology. I would highly value the opportunity to share with youngsters my appreciation of this field of study. I would like nothing better than to see them excel!

I am dedicated to the belief that every child can succeed. This starts with developing a rapport with the student, engaging their interests, and using problem solving to emphasize talents that will build confidence and allow them to work independently to reach their potential. Secondly I believe that the student can develop specific skills that can help them master areas of difficulty as well as advanced subjects. Finally as someone who has worked in the science field I feel that the tools that science provides are tremendously empowering and seeing their transformative effect on all students is why I enjoy teaching.

A Little Bit About Me...

During my four years of college, I learned an extensive degree of time management. I was a full time biology student with an education certification attached, a softball player (captain for last two years), and a supervisor at a local coffee shop. It was as I realized my success as a student with a busy schedule, that drove me to teach and tutor others. I felt I had developed a gift in study skills and gained a deep scientific knowledge that made me feel I would be a great tutor. After a semester of tutoring at-risk students in a local high school, I realized my true love for teaching. I have a passion to make students successful, and teach them the skills they need.

Educational Philosophy Teacher-directed classroom management is most closely aligned with my beliefs in the beginning of a school year because I want the students to understand that I am the leader of the classroom and that ultimately I am responsible for what transpires in the classroom. As the school year progresses, it is my belief that the classroom should continue to evolve with a student-centered approach with an emphasis on students vesting in learning as much as they can from inquiry and from each other. I want to shape a positive learning environment where students are excited about working to their own potential.

I believe that one of the challenges in teaching is motivating the students to be interested in learning. I believe that a good teacher who truly wants to instill life-long learning skills in his/her students challenges them by engaging and empowering them to become independent/critical thinkers/problem-solvers rather than making them dependent on him/her or on "route"/"regurgitative" learning. One must find the best approach to present the material and convey the essential elements of a lesson plan or rather “instructional session” in the classroom and the laboratory.
