My comments on tutoring ACT : While teaching, I also taught classes to raise ACT scores in English and in Reading. My students' scores always went up, and on average, the students usually scored four points higher on the ACT than the previous ACT. More than one student even jumped from a 15 in English to a 29. Many students were able to obtain scholarships and avoid remedial college classes due to better scores in English and Reading on their ACTs.

I believe in engaging the students in their learning. In order to avoid boredom and to get students active in their learning, they need to move, collaborate, and have discussions and Socratic Circles to debate and argue their ideas in a reasonable way to prepare them for what goes beyond grade school. Students should be involved in projects that involve creation, and thinking outside of the box. We should be teaching our students to use digital tools in order to take an interest in learning outside of the classroom. And because of so much technology, students have information at their fingertips, which means instead of memorization and recall questions, we should have students explain what they have learned through a variety of methods using a variety of research. Also as teachers, we should be guides to the students as they navigate through the information overload and prepare to e ... read more

I received my BA degree in Ecology/ Evolution from the University of Utah. Many years later after serving in the military and starting a family, I went back to school to receive a teaching certificate in the state of NC, after moving to Arkansas with my family, I converted it to an Arkansas license. In 2009, I returned to school again to fulfill a dream of completing a Master's degree. I have been working as a substitute teacher for 5 years and I have been tutoring for 2 years. My goal is really for the person I am tutoring to fully understand the information they are trying to learn. In this way, they can understand the basics and build upon that. I believe the best way to approach a new student is to find out their weaknesses and strengths. Then, really put some hard work into making their weak points better and making their strong points the best they can be. I think that it is best for a student to know how to do their work with AND without a calculator for full understanding in mathematics. Finally, I think it is important for a tutor to try to be a friend to the student so that the environment is comfortable and inviting for the best learning outcomes.
I have recently graduated from Lyon College with a degree in mathematics and a 4.0. From this I have achieved a high level of excellence and performance. Also, I worked as a math tutor for Lyon Colle ... read more

Children are our future. I believe that all children have something wonderful to offer the community. Learning is not always easy for children, I take the time to find out the strengths and weakness they my have, I find out what their interest are, this is a great tool for teaching children something they may be struggling in, an I strive to provide a safe and fun environment for them to learn in. I love working with children, this is a gift, I learn as much from them and they learn from me. My first priorty to assist students in learning is developing a positive relationship with them, and then try to identify their strengths and weaknesses. From that point I can then begin to provide assistance and correction. One of the secrets or truths to student achievement is building their confidence and establishing high self-esteem traits toward achievement in that particular subject area.
I began my educational goals as a medical student, but later was advised that I should branch off into teaching and instructional applications by undergraduate and graduate professors.I'm so glad I took their advice because I really enjoy teaching and observing growth and development in my students. My teaching experience include 15.5 years of teaching biology, chemistry, environmental science, earth science, physical science, and algebra I and II. I am currently beginning my Masters in Education, so tutoring is just a stepping stone for me! I currently hold a BS in Exercise Physiology. I have a great understanding of science, math, and general education courses. I have previous experience in tutoring, mostly in math (Algebra) and Anatomy/Physiology.
I enjoy all age groups, anyone with a willingness to learn. I am very determined to help those in need find academic success. I also understand that each student is different, so the same learning technique does not work for everyone.

I started teaching Music in 1984. I taught part-time, temporary while pursuing education goals and working as a professional musician. In 1998 I became an adult educator, and in the following nine years I taught GED, Workforce, Computer and ESL. I learned to speak Spanish from some of my ESL students. Today I run a new program called Bachillerato de las Americas en Arkansas, comprised of curricula obtained from Kingston, Jamaica and Heredia, Costa Rica. I enjoy teaching all age levels.
I consider myself a facilitator, not an authoritarian. I ascribe to the principles set forth by Malcolm Knowels and Benjamin Bloom. I rely on the strength and motivation of the student. I hesitate to call myself "teacher." I think I serve better as a guide which, hopefully, leads his client not just to a more enlightend place, but also to the place the client wants to be, or had in mind in the fir ... read more

I have earned a BS in Chemistry and a minor in Math. I am currently working as a chemist, so I have kept up with all the new studies that are taking place right now. I have tutored all through High School, College and thereafter. I have a real passion for learning math, all sciences, and history. I hope I can pass this respect for these studies on to everyone I teach.
I believe we all learn in different ways, and I am always open minded in finding the best way for that student I am working with at that time. I believe everyone can achieve the highest of goals if we all strive for that success and find out a way to get there. However, most of all I hope I can leave a feeling of respect for the studies and for the people around us.
