A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching philosophy is to get students to think about science as a process, and to individualize their learning experiences. I prompt them to “why” and “how” questions at every stage.
Progressing through graduate school and working as a undergraduate student demonstrator allowed me to define learning as a personal process of growth. Being able to ask questions and actually attempt to answer those questions was extremely motivating. Involving and motivating students presents its challenges, but my goal of individualizing learning creates an open and comfortable environment where students can feel free to ask questions, make mistakes, and challenge themselves. It is by breaking down the barriers to learning that students can face their own misconceptions.

Also, I have taught English as a Second Language as an intern while studying abroad in London for one semester. For this position, I taught from self-made exercises, lesson plans, and individualised activities focusing on English comprehension, writing, communication, grammar, and literature.

I am, by nature, an "explainer" who can easily put himself in the shoes of the student. With patience, and a knack for common communication, I have been able to cogently and clearly, I feel, get across abstruse and complex concepts, issues and ideas to those patient enough to follow the process. I have been an active member of my local chapter of Cafe Scientifique (Pittsburgh), and this has allowed me, over several years, to communicate with the local scientific community on a wide variety of topics. I feel that I am one of their lead expositors of Scientific topics, and this skill is a natural path towards tutoring.
Have been teaching and tutoring all my life! I have been told by many people that this is a natural talent I possess. I am somewhat of a generalist in the sciences and keep pretty much up to date in the field. I feel that my training in Psychology is an added skill set ... read more

As a result of my post-high school studies in mathematics and business, I feel I'm suited to tutor people in those subjects. Statistics, quantitative methods, and analytical methods are my strongest subjects. Additionally, I have college graduate level skills in English/grammar, science, and social studies. Although theses were not part of my major, I do have above high school skills to share with those who need help in those subjects. Out of those three, my English skills are above average from writing many research papers on business subjects.
This particular position interests me because I struggled with math through middle school and understand the frustration it can create for a student. Mathematics is now my strongest subject and I chose the profession of accounting to utilize those strengths. During my time at college, I helped other students with their studies in math ... read more

I am taking a class in my Master's program in which I have learned six different educational methods to use with students. Each method is different, and I have been able to learn and work through each of them. I am confident in my ability to concentrate learning through cooperative groups, presentations, direct instructions, problem based and discovery topics, concept lessons, and disscusions. I have also been taught in each lesson how to edit the lesson for English Language Learners, gifted students, and students who need more support. I believe that each child learns in their own unique way. Therefore, the best way to teach a student would be to understand the way they learn best, and then cater the tutoring and teaching to meet their indiviual needs.
I have always loved to learn. In college, I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a BS in Biology. However, I ma ... read more

The experience of teaching students, though complicated at times, was extremely rewarding. I felt a sense of joy when my students understood a concept here and there. I soon realized I was slowly becoming a role model to younger students that were interested in studying chemistry. My experiences as a graduate student and teaching assistant enhanced my curiosity and desire to help young scholars achieve their dreams. One of my main goals of teaching is to promote active learning which will be approach using real case studies, minute paper and concept maps to review previous student’s knowledge and draw a parallel of the concepts discussed in the lecture.
I have a Ph.D in Chemistry in 2008. I have taught chemistry labs for 4 years in my graduate school. From 1999-2001, I was tutoring students from elementary school up to high school in math and science classes

I prefer to work one on one with a single student, I do my very best to make my student feel comfortable and ready to learn. I learn what the student likes; music, sports, movies, I use these things to relate to the student and then i'm able to relate the learning material to the students favorite things which I think helps them to be more receptive.
I began tutoring while in high school, as a junior and senior I would spend 2-3 afternoons a week at the Middle School helping the learning support classes write book reports. While in college at Slippery Rock University, I put up flyers around campus and worked as an independent tutor for five dollars an hour aiding my fellow students finish their final papers at the end of each semester. I feel that my degree in Creative Writing aids me greatly in tutoring because my ability to think outside the box and put myself in the writers shoe ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching for about 14 years. I discovered teaching while I was doing volunteer work bringing science to elementary school children in the inner cities of Philadelphia. I was hooked. I had so much fun and the fact that I could get paid for it was secondary but a bonus. I started out as a middle school teacher and I have been quite successful with them at science fair competitions. One year, 6 of my sixth graders took 6 of the 7 places in city fair. My eighth graders won first place 2 years in a row. One student went on to state competition (he won 2nd place in a category higher than his grade level), and another was awarded and honored at a Spectroscopy Society dinner. I am presently teaching high school Chemistry and General Science, and I love what I do.
My teaching style is student centered and hands-on. I try to get students to recreate what scientist ... read more

I also spent a semester in Brazil with Antioch College traveling and learning with different ecosystems. I have experience writing preparing/carrying out experiments and writing reports. Since College I worked two years for a smelting plant in their lab. I currently work now as a medical lab tech for UPMC. I am pursuing my education by taking prereqs to get my masters in teaching.
