A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style varies upon subject and student.
I graduated from Jefferson High School in the spring of 2012. I now attend Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne. I have two younger siblings and 4 younger step-siblings that I have helped with their homework, or helped them better understand material assigned to them. Their ages range from 8-17. I know how to explain certain subjects in multiple ways to ensure that eventually the student will understand the material. I am very patient, and I understand that some people learn at slower rates than others. I am majoring in nursing, though I considered teaching English before making this decision. Grammar is one of my top subjects! As a six-year English teacher, I used to begin each of my classes with a grammar exercise in order to remind students of the grammar rules and also to keep them proficient in the correct ways of speaking and writing formal English.

I am a very hands-on learner, so I tend to try to make things as hands on or as real to life as possible.
Since graduating from Baptist Bible College in 2006, I have been teaching high school English in Indiana for six years now. I taught three years at Bethesda Christian School in Brownsburg, where I spanned English 9, 10, 11, Senior Speech, and Advanced Composition for seniors. A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is that all students learn differently, so why to teach them using the same methods? I learned through college that I am a very visual learner, but if the class isn’t taught that way, it’s my job to present that information in a way that helps me learn. Also, the teacher should play a dichotomous role to the student; on one hand, he or she must be patient and lenient and willing to teach the student to the best of their abilities, but also, the teacher cannot be so lenient that the student doesn’t get work done. I am a proponent of the authoritative relationship between students and learners. A teacher has to be helpful and calm, but not so easygoing that work isn’t getting done.

Students learn to write by writing (and by reading). I have used a number of different text books but I find that students learn best when writing about something that matters to them. My approach to tutoring, then, would be to find out what a student truly cares about and start from there. In addition, I would begin by taking a diagnostic writing sample in order to see what mechanical issues seemed most important to address. I would never attempt to tutor a student with some kind of formulaic, standardized regimen of study but would work my hardest to tailor tutoring sessions to the individual needs of each student.
