My comments on tutoring Poetry : I won the Outstanding Poetry award in my Highschool in 2008, and later won the Creative Writing: Poetry award at Rochester institute of technology in 2013. I took several creative writing classes while obtaining my BS, including Poetry Workshop classes.

I have always had a passion for learning. Part of my passion includes helping others learn, grow, and succeed. As an undergraduate student, I volunteered as a Peer Mentor in order to help new students become accustomed to their classes. I also worked as a Peer Mentor for students who were struggling with their grades. Peer Mentors are carefully selected by Rochester Institute of Technology through a detailed application process. I volunteered as an English tutor, as well as a proofreader of essays, research papers, and projects. I have had the opportunity to work at a daycare for several years with children ranging from 6 weeks of age to 12 years. I have loved being able to help these children grow, learn, and succeed in their education. As a tutor, my specialties are American Sign Language and English. My undergraduate studies were in American Sign Language-English interpreting ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a graduate of Houghton College. I graduated from this liberal arts college on May 12th of this year with a Bachelor’s degree in English/Writing and with a minor in Psychology. During my time at Houghton College, I was very involved with the student-run publications that the school offered. My junior and senior years I worked as a journalist for the school newspaper (http://www.houghtonstar.com/). I wrote articles covering diverse topics ranging from essays on sub-culture to an article covering the Oscars. My senior year, I was given the position of co-editor of the school literary magazine, after having been involved with the publication for two years prior to receiving this position. With this position came the responsibility of dealing with every aspect of the publication process, including finances, production, design, and advertisement, as well as the planning of release ... read more

Experienced Teacher Available

After teaching for 12 years, I decided to step away from the classroom in order to spend more time with my own two kids. I taught in both Rochester City and Brighton, with kids in grades 7-12. Many of my students struggled in school for all different reasons. I would love the opportunity to work with you. School can be really frustrating, but it doesn't have to be. I know a few tricks to help it go more smoothly, and I'd love to share them with you!
I believe in meeting students right where they are, and letting them progress at their own rate. I make learning as relevant as possible and incorporate many hands-on learning opportunities. I present information in a multitude of ways, using modifications and graphic organizers. School should be fun, and most importantly, it should make sense!!

Old Soldier who likes teaching English

I taught for 9 yrs at the 1159 US Army Reserve Forces School. I helped soldiers get promoted to SSG, SFC, & MSG by providing them with skills in writing correspondence, public speaking, lesson planning & class preparation for delivery in both a classroom & tactical (field) environment. I also provided remedial training for soldiers needing additional work in writing, lesson planning & class presentation.
I told my students there was no "wrong" way to present class material. They were told they would be videotaped & critiqued by their class members..BUT their presentation would be on their military specialty (eg. a Motor Pool SGT would do a class on vehicle maintenance)..thereby increasing the "comfort level" of the presenter & enhancing the knowledge of the class. The students would be taught to affirm each other & give each other positive "feed-back".

As a Research Scientist in Corporate America, I took the opportunity to focus on enhancing the math and science education of high, middle, and elementary school students. In addition to hands-on classroom activities, I was involved in the Program In Rochester to Interest Students in Science and Math (PRISSM), judged Science Fairs and Science Competitions. Because of my goal of enhancing student achievement, I have taught Chemistry at the Junior College level for the past eight years. I love the appreciation of English Literature and English Grammar as well and so, upon retirement, have taught French and Latin to students in middle school and high school.
The word student comes from the Latin to be eager, and I love to instill the love of learning, n eagerness to learn, in children. The education or drawing out of a child's mind is the ultimate goal, and doing so in a discipline ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I respect all children and the variety of ways in which they learn. I firmly believe that children (by nature) are curious about learning and therefore, capable of learning when presented with an engaging program of study. My instructional approach often entails the use of games, as a medium to stimulate my students. In addition, I always strive to enhance my students’ self-esteem, because I believe in them and their abilities. My objective as a tutor is to utilize the teaching strategies that I have acquired, in conjunction with my knowledge about your child (his/her interests and learning preferences) to develop a teaching plan that will take him/her to the next level of his/her education.
I was fortunate to receive a very distinguished education through a local school of the Arts program and an Ivy League institution. Both experiences produced within me a tenacious commitme ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Education stands atop my own list of the most important plights of mankind. I believe people are at their highest capacity for learning when they are children, and that such open minds should be given the resources to grow and educate themselves. I am very patient and persistent in my methods. I think teaching is an art of framing the student's mind so that they find themselves more engaged in the world through expression and description of it from the human language perspective (whether numerical or verbal). I get along well with kids and as long as the student I am working with has an attitude of openness, I am sure that it will be a successful, possibly even fun, experience.
As a Cornell graduate, I have had the opportunity be lectured by academic experts spanning a wide variety of disciplines, and have experienced many different teaching styles. I have worked as a course assis ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am fortunate to have developed strong and long-lasting relationships with many of my students and their families. Some of my former junior high students e-mail me their high school drafts for my input. I have an easy going demeanor, but students know I hold them to high standards. I have been cited for creativity, empathy, and student-focus, as well as collaboration with parents and staff. My style of teaching is flexible by necessity as no two students are exactly alike.
After completing my BA and achieving NYS certification in Elementary, Special Ed, and Secondary English, I worked in the Rochester City School District as Special Ed teacher in middle and high school. I also held longterm substitute positions in many city elementary classrooms. For nine years I taught junior high English and Social Studies for Monroe County Catholic Schools. When the Diocese closed most of its c ... read more
