My teaching style depends on the student. I am comfortable with trying different study methods in order to figure out why my student is having trouble with a particular subject.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. I love being able to help students feel comfortable with the material they are studying. I have tutored numerous times throughout college, and would like to get back into tutoring students because I find it to be rewarding. As a student who went from living in Germany and being taught that there are many ways of getting the right answer, to moving to America where everything is taught in one way, I have learned to incorporate my tutoring skills to the need of each individual student. I believe that a love of school and learning begins with confidence in one's own abilities. Some find it easy, and others need a certain dose of encouragement and guidance to gain that self-assurance. As a tutor, I think it’s important to provide consistent practice and celebrate small successes so that the student rediscovers how good it feels to do well. In addition to regular exercises, I take the time to explain how and why things work and what their applications are in life outside school. I believe that this helps the student understand the rationale behind their efforts and can spark more enthusiasm to learn. My approach is to determine the student's weaknesses, and then formulate analogies to explain the difficult concepts. I study the student's learning style in order to infuse the new material as easily as possible. Additionally, I introduce new ways to understand the material, and then observe the student's reaction.
I graduated Rutgers University majoring in Biology and German, and minoring in Chemistry. I have a strong science background, which I will continue to expand by completing a PhD at Yale starting in the Fall. I have experience tutoring students in math during the last 2 years of high school, and 1 year of calculus tutoring in college. The most important characteristic in helping a child learn is to not only demonstrate a profound knowledge of material, but channel one's charisma into helping motivate the learner. Making it interesting, teaching in several different planes, and understanding how the student learns, are several core components of my teaching strategies. I enjoy teaching children, students of all ages and those willing to learn. As a high school student, I was involved in inner city teaching and I helped hartford students in their studies after their school. I appreciate higher education and I truly understand what it takes to teach as I myself teach my own children with their homework from their own schools after they come home.
