Sign Language is one of my top subjects! I am proficient in ASL, I have been an interpreter for almost 20 years as well as being a coda(child of deaf adults)

I have signed since birth being born to deaf parents. I have Interpreted for approximately 20 years in the school system at the junior high school and high school levels. I have hearing impaired family and friends & am immersed in the deaf culture which helps keep my signing vocabulary current. Sign Language is one of my top subjects! Currently, I am working as a community and educational interpreter. I completed an interpreter training program several years ago and have been signing for over 12 years.

I am flexible. Sign language can only be learned through repetition and practice, so there will be a lot of voice-off communication exchanges. Depending on the learning style of the student, I have several resources that can be incorporated into my lessons. Also, I prefer to know the goal of students to focus on specific vocabulary, if necessary, in effort to refrain from learning "extra" signs if becoming fluent in American Sign Language is not their goal.
Recently I have begun working as an American Sign Language instructor (adjunct professor) at a local community college and have been tutoring a variety of students outside of the classroom. This is often a result of inadequate teaching practices which fail to recognize individual learning differences in students. During my journey to complete my B.S. of Biology at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey I was inspired to help others educate themselves. I informally tutored my peers in biology and writing courses. I was recommended to become a writing tutor at this institution but was graduating too early to complete the required qualifying courses. I edited a plethora of biology lab reports as well as research papers for various majors. It's true that every student learns at a different pace with a different style. I like to see myself as a cameleon teacher, catering my format to individual needs. My style tends to be laid back so that students are comfortable expressing their likes and dislikes with me, curbing their fear of not understanding something. I love to use metaphors, pictures, examples and stories to illustrate the subject in a new and perhaps clearer way.
