Teaching and School Counseling Services In One Place!

I have been a teacher for the last fifteen years. I teach social studies, but my specialization is teaching argumentative (college level) writing.I have done plenty of SAT prep and tutoring for students at the high school and college level. I am also a school counselor and can offer a vast array of services including FASFA, Naviance/Common Application and college/career counseling.
My style of education is to teach by modeling. Students need to see things in a step-by-step format with instructions, followed by an immediate example. I also provide sample argumentative essays for students who learn by seeing a complete model. My counseling style is to work with students, first by building a rapport and then using that as the foundation to get a feel for their college/career interests. I then look at their grades to help them build a custom transitional plan into early adulthood.

SAT - Verbal is one of my top subjects!

Experienced and New York State Certified teacher. I have over 10 years experience teaching students in grades 1-12 and 5 years experience teaching adults. I also have extensive tutoring experience. I have an MA from Marist College as well as a BA from NYU. I have designed and taught SAT prep classes (verbal/writing portion) as well as developing curriculum integrating diverse domains of knowledge to create a broad, deep and flexible learning experience for students.
I believe that competence and confidence are BOTH important in learning. Students bring their own knowledge and learning styles to the process. It is the teachers job not only to adapt instructional style to best support the learner, but also to help the student understand his or her own learning style and needs.

I believe teaching is more than just showing how to solve a problem, but is helping the student to discover the “bigger picture”. For that reason, I ask a lot of questions to ensure that a student is not just learning by rote, but understands a topic within its larger context. In that way, he or she is learning not only how to solve a particular problem or answer a specific question, but also how to apply it to other problems in the future. I also like to make problems relevant. Students often complain that there is no reason to study something – math, for example. But I like to show that indeed, they use it all the time and that it can be fun. Learning should not only be effective, but enjoyable as well.
At my Ivy League college, we were taught not just facts, but how to learn. This invaluable skill has stood me well and put me in an excellent position to teach. I have continued ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

After graduating college I taught elementary K-8th grade in NYC. I taught for one year and decided to live Paris, France teaching English. I lived in Paris, France for 1.5 years then moved to Rome, Italy, again teaching English. My experiences were wonderful as I met people who really enjoyed learning English and needed it for work. After 6 months I returned to the states and taught at a Junior High School on the Lower eastside of NYC. I left teaching after 10 years to market computers. My skills as an educator served me well and I did extremely well. After approximately 8 years I decided I wanted to go back to teaching, and have been teaching the use of computers. I enjoy helping individuals to increase their skills and achieve success!
As I read the example noted below, I hear an echo, YES, I too love to teach. I see myself as a mentor. Listening and watching how people learn, wh ... read more

I enjoy helping students understand the principles they are dealing with, rather than focusing on helping them simply "get the answer" to the problem at hand. My goal is for them to be able to generalize the concept and apply it in different contexts. To develop interest, I seek to discuss related information or similar problems as much as possible. For Physics in particular, this approach is key to providing a sound foundation for future learning.
Most of my career has been spent at IBM, where I built on my Physics background for a broad range of opportunities. I am now seeking to move into a teaching career and plan to start a Masters in Teaching in the Fall of 2009. During my educational development, I taught for three years in undergraduate and graduate school as part of the duties of a teaching Assistant. I have tutored secondary school students for the last 5 years in M ... read more

Because I enjoy and see the wonder in science and I like to show that to students. If they see a reason to want the knowledge, and see how it can expand their horizons, then they will be more open to learning. A common problem with individuals needing tutoring is that they sometimes do not think they have the "smarts" to learn the subject. My first objective is to show them they have the "stuff" to get it! Then I show them how it can be fun. This needs to be balanced with the practical need to get passing grades and complete the course work. My style is marked with a belief in the student and I encourage them and acknowledge their progress.
I received a technology degree in 1975. Several years later I returned to college to persue a Physics/Mechanical Engineering Degree from SUNY New Paltz and RPI. I was an "A" student in Physics and enjoyed tutoring many classmates. I was a gue ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy tutoring immensely and look forward to beginning again. I like the challenge of engaging and reaching different types of learners. I use my social works skills in tutoring and vice versa. I think these two fields are closely related in the sense that I seek to empower my students as I would my clients.
I have several years of tutoring experience at various settings including urban, suburban, and rural high and middle schools. I have tutored such subjects as French, Spanish, Math, and English. I have also tutored college students in subjects including sociology, psychology, statistics, and others. A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working with children, and have a passion for literature and language. I believe that my love of the written word can be “contagious”, and that by modeling this love of literature, my students will come to see the value in studying the classics: insight into the thoughts and ideas of others. I have high expectations for all of my students, and I know that each student learns at a different rate and through a different approach. I believe in tailoring my methods in order to meet the particular learning style of each of my students.
Upon graduation from college in the 80's, I taught adult education for three years. I then entered the business world, where I had a successful career in sales and operations management. In 2009, I chose to leave my corporate career and reenter education because of a desire to utilize my strengths and do something that helps people. I obtai ... read more

For writing, usually I conduct some exercises. The level of the critique and what to say depends heavily on the age of the student. For grammar, I would either find or create my own practice materials and we could go over whatever is necessary until I've decided that the student is making improvements or the student has succeeded.
Over the past year, I have tried to extend my ability to share my love and appreciation of English and literature with others. As an English/Communications major, I am very knowledgable in a variety of subjects including grammar, writing composition and reading comprehension. Last year, as President of the Writers Forum, we spent several months tutoring as part of an after school program where we helped children in Baltimore write.

Both my Education and work experiences have thoroughly enhanced both my knowledge, as well as my communications skills. Having a degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry, I have attained knowledge in various fields of science. I have been gifted with a natural ability to communicate, and my experiences in both work and study have enhanced both my verbal and my written communication skill. Both in college as well in camps, I have had the privilege of tutoring people, primarily in the sciences.
I enjoy helping people acquire knowledge. I have experienced the full spectrum of both poor and excellent instructors myself, so I am aware of what needs to be done in order to facilitate learning. I do not have a lot of experience in the teaching field but I am a natural born teacher. I have been a mentor to many people in my life; friends, co-workers, even family members would say the same. If given the opportunity I will be able to grow with and enjoy the success of all my students. We will indulge in the passion of education!

I have several years experience working with children and adults in the education field. The students I have taught at the college level ranged from late teens to early 30s. As I have worked with such a wide range of ages I am familiar with the needs of students in each age group I have taught. I work with the student to understand the areas in which they are not as strong or confident and work with them to develop a method of studying and learning that works best for them. I believe that one of the most beneficial methods of learning material is to relate the material to something the student may be more familiar with or something with which they can relate.
I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the State University of New York at SUNY New Paltz and I have matriculated into the Master of Arts in Biology program at the same university. As a result of my many ... read more

I enjoy working closely with students and their families to achieve the student's goals. I know that the definition of "success" can vary greatly, and have worked with students in many different situations--students on the verge of failing a course, those trying to advance beyond their current coursework, and students preparing for college entrance exams. I often spend months or years working with each student and enjoy seeing them progress academically and gain confidence. With plenty of patience and teamwork, I believe that I can help a student to achieve his or her goals.
