My comments on tutoring Statistics : Expert - have done PhD level work in mathematics

I have over 30 years of experience in the oil industry, initially in quality control, but quickly promoted to programmer after writing some programs on my own time to help with the quality control. I have programmed professionally since 1979, using many different languages and operating systems, on many different kinds of hardward (mainframes, work stations, PC's, Macs). I have written a lot of software on my own, including many UNIX utilities (much improved versions of ls, grep, and diff, for example). I have written 2 powerful command line calculator programs, as well as some powerful mathematical graphics software, which I can use in tutoring. I used to tutor a lot when I was in college and for a while thereafter, was often told I was good at it, that I should be a teacher. I have been active on several Facebook math pages, where I have submitted and solved a number of math probl ... read more

Statistics is one of my top subjects! I have taken more than 30 hours of coursework in Statistics in my graduate coursework. Statistical methods learned include: descriptive statistics (mean, mode, median, histograms, distributions, etc.), ANOVA, ANCOVA, Repeated Measures, t-test, Regression, Hierarchical Linear Modeling, and bivariate correlations. I also have experience on calculating odds ratios and relative risk. I have books on basic descriptive statistics and biostatistics to demonstrate further application to my students.

My teaching style is VERY approachable. I like to break down elaborate concepts and apply them directly to everyday occurrences as much as possible. For example, when I would teach middle school students math such as fractions and percentages, I would relate these to money so as not complicate understanding. I also use every day occurrences to explain statistics. For example, if I'm interested in why people decide to buy a car (outcome), I'm interested in miles per gallon of gas, crash safety, and tire tread (independent variables). I would use a linear regression to determine the variable that has the most significant affect on predicting the outcome.
My experience has led to three college degrees, and a world of experience housed in science and mathematics. I have also mentored 12 undergraduates as a graduate student. These students have gone on to present projects at professiona ... read more

More About This Tutor...

In having a science background, I have not only learned laboratory skills and reasoning skills, but I have learned how to increase efficiency, communicate in a clear manner, and write in a way that is direct and clear. I enjoy learning, and I instill that passion into my students as best I can. I grew up with a mom who is an English teacher, so I have developed good communication skills and writing skills from her. I have taught Biology for two years at the college level and I very much enjoy the experience of knowing that what you have been trying to convey to your students just hit home. That is a great feeling.
I think it takes a lot for one teacher to reach all of types of students who are all at different levels of interest in the subject being taught as well as at different levels of understanding. However, I feel it is the teacher's responsibility to give them all equal ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I really love and enjoy teaching children. It is real fun working with children. I am patient and try to understand each child's level of understanding and create an interest towards the subject.I would be happy to help children better understand the concepts of algebra and calculus.

A Little Bit About Me...

Experience tutoring math to elementary age children through adults in college. I have earned a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of New Mexico, and I am working on completing pre-med requirements at the University of Houston Clear Lake. I have completed 15 credit hours in Biological Sciences with a GPA of 4.0. I also have two years of experience as a community mentor, working with elementary school children.
I enjoy teaching children. I normally have a very relaxed style, but I emphasize setting goals and completing the task at hand. I gain a great deal of personal satisfaction in helping others learn. I believe the most important attributes of a good teacher are, 1. keeping the student's best interest in mind, and 2. maintaining a positive attitude and keeping the learning process interesting for the student.

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated Cum Laude from the University of Houston with a BS in physics and a minor in mathematics, so I have great experience in physics and mathematics. I pride myself on my grammar skills from writing lab reports and essays. I have tutored many individuals in the subjects of mathematics and sciences.
I enjoy teaching people of all ages. I understand that some people take longer to comprehend certain subjects, particularly complex subjects like sciences and mathematics. I believe that it is necessary to be patient with people when they don't understand something, even if it takes more time than it usually would. Teaching is one of the most important parts of a person's growth, and I want to be a part of that for someone.
