I have over 30 years of experience in the oil industry, initially in quality control, but quickly promoted to programmer after writing some programs on my own time to help with the quality control. I have programmed professionally since 1979, using many different languages and operating systems, on many different kinds of hardward (mainframes, work stations, PC's, Macs). I have written a lot of software on my own, including many UNIX utilities (much improved versions of ls, grep, and diff, for example). Statistics is one of my top subjects! I have taken more than 30 hours of coursework in Statistics in my graduate coursework. Statistical methods learned include: descriptive statistics (mean, mode, median, histograms, distributions, etc.), ANOVA, ANCOVA, Repeated Measures, t-test, Regression, Hierarchical Linear Modeling, and bivariate correlations. I also have experience on calculating odds ratios and relative risk. I have books on basic descriptive statistics and biostatistics to demonstrate further application to my students.

My teaching style is VERY approachable. I like to break down elaborate concepts and apply them directly to everyday occurrences as much as possible. For example, when I would teach middle school students math such as fractions and percentages, I would relate these to money so as not complicate understanding. I also use every day occurrences to explain statistics. For example, if I'm interested in why people decide to buy a car (outcome), I'm interested in miles per gallon of gas, crash safety, and tire tread (independent variables). I would use a linear regression to determine the variable that has the most significant affect on predicting the outcome.
