I think it is important to understand that everyone can learn, however it is just a matter of how long it takes. Kids learn at different paces. They may need to be shown a different way to learn. For example, I believe that children learn to read by understanding the book,through meaning. It's important to discuss what is happening in the book. I have a guided reading lesson plan that tells me exactly what I need to work on with that student. Is the student looking at the pictures to help him/her with a word? etc.. I am very patient and kind. I love working with kids and seeing their faces light up when they have achieved certain goals.

One of the first graduates of a dual degree program from Lesley College(www.lesley.edu),I received a BS/MEd in Early Childhood Education specializing in Early Intervention in 1999. Beginning in June of 1999, I raised my three children full-time. During that time, I worked part-time as a Therapeutic Mentor for PSC of Maine(www.provcorp.com). PSC is a behavioral health agency that serves at-risk school-aged children and their families. Knowing students as people is extremely important when teaching as it allows for a teacher to choose methods that work best for the individual student (learning styles and multiple intelligences come in to play here). Students should feel both safe and comfortable in their learning environment so that they may reap the most benefits from education. I believe that all students maintain the right to learn in an environment that is safe as well as conducive to learning.
