A Little Bit About Me...

Being a CODA, child of deaf adults, has allowed me to be fluent in mine and my parent's native language of American Sign Language. Through my 13 years of professional work in the sign language field, I have tutored and taught sign language and have mainly worked as a sign language interpreter for the Deaf and hearing community. Currently and for all of my professional years of interpreting, I have worked in the educational setting interpreting for mainstreamed Deaf and hard of hearing students at both high school and college level. There are many things that I have to offer a student interested in learning sign, the language itself and also the culture associated with American Sign.
It is best to learn sign language in person. Signs are done from the hands and facial expressions and is best learned in person.

I've been doing sign language for 18 years, I have a brother and sister who are deaf and thats how I became skilled. I enjoy doing sign language and tutoring people who are willing to learn it. I've taught other family members, friends, even students from school. Whenever someone notices me doing sign language they always come near me and ask me to teach them. I sign very fluently, many people think I am deaf because they see how fast I sign. I am always willing to meet new people and share my skills with them. Its always fun to learn new things.
Starting off teaching ABC's then working your way up the ladder with whole words and sentences.

I have taught myself ASL for the last 4 years, and only recently took a class. I was too advanced for the class, and all the other classes offered, and now I meet with my teacher once a week to practice. I am in college to become an ASL Interpreter. Aside from the language itself, I also know a lot about deaf culture and I am more that happy to tutor for either subject.

A Little Bit About Me...

Since I was a child in elementary school, I have driven to achieve educational excellence for myself and to help and encourage those in my community to achieve the same. As a high school student, I tutored elementary aged kids and when I went on to college I was the director of an after school tutoring program sponsored by the Nashville Public Library. I was later employed by a private tutoring company called Club-Z tutoring. I have always had a passion for math, which made it possible for me to excel in math related subjects and helped me to graduate with dual degrees from Tennessee State in mathematics and electrical engineering. While I have tutored in chemistry, reading, English, and helped with papers, I find the most satisfaction in tutoring in math of all difficulties ranging from arithmetic to advanced calculus.
I enjoy teaching others but I am most satisfied when they are ... read more

Through my experience with Big Brothers Big Sisters and MAXIM Healthcare Services, I have tutored many children with different educational backgrounds that required different concentrated attention. I gauge how I tutor a child by their personal needs. I take the time needed to understand the child’s personality and listen to which is their preferred style of learning. I choose to gain their trust and build their confidence immediately. Used techniques are: verbal (lecture), visual (flashcards, diagrams, etc.), repetition (both verbal and visual), games, question and answer sessions, and more. It is most important to use the method that is the most effective to the child’s educational and emotional needs.
During my journey to complete my B.S. of Biology at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey I was inspired to help others educate themselves. I informally tutored my peers in bi ... read more
