A Little Bit About Me...

My approach to teaching students mathematics is to first ensure they understand the basics. In my experience, students typically have trouble learning new material because they have not mastered the previous material, which is typically a prerequisite to understanding the new material. I believe with enough time spent on the basics, any student can learn more advanced mathematical concepts. Once I feel their understanding of the previous material is strong, I walk them through example problems and then have them solve increasingly difficult problems on their own. However, I am very flexible with my teaching methods; if they have trouble with this model, I am willing to try different things to ensure they are learning.

I believe that different teaching styles help different students. A method of both lecture and active learning can be effective for the widest range of students. This allows the students to get a brief introduction to the day’s material before they work in groups on questions about the material. I feel that student’s can learn best from each other because they are all at the same level. If a group is unsure of an answer they can always ask the teacher or look it up in a book. Finally, active learning demands that the students find the answers instead of being told them. This will benefit them greatly once they join the work force.

Working with students in math, I like to ask what the student enjoys doing while not in school. I like to relate this to the math to make it more interesting as well as making it fun. This will also make the student more comfortable and lowers the stress level. In lower level courses in basic math up to middle level courses such as algebra, the methods used are integrating the content into the unsolved variables and/or word problems.
