A Little Bit About Me...

I currently work in a PreK-12 School setting as a Certified School Library Media Specialist. I am responsible for teaching Prek-6th grade library/research lessons. When I am not teaching I am monitoring 7-12 students who are utilizing the library media cnter. I manage two library spaces, am the primary purchaser for books, technologies, and databases, and work closely with the administration team to meet and exceed curricular goals. Previously I worked in a K-6 setting with similar responsibilities. While working with on my Masters degree I substitute taught in several of the area school districts. I believe that students learn best when they are able to use a variety of I believe it is necessary to access prior learning in order to know where to begin the learning process. Then I believe it is necessary for students to participate in both guided practice as well as independent practice in order to assess whether or not they have a working knowledge of the material that is being taught. I also believe in using both formative assessment and summative assessment. I like children to learn through exploring. This is not to say that I do not teach, but I plan lessons in a way that allows students to learn at their own pace. I feel like if I can put together a lesson that gives children a motivation to learn, they will learn on a deeper level than if I am merely telling them information. With my middle school math students whom I tutored, this meant that we learned about fractions through art. It was not enough to explain to them how fractions worked, I realized that they needed to experience fractions.
