During my Junior and Senior year of college, I tutored at a Children's Home in Lubbock, TX, 3 nights a week. I have also taught Sunday School classes off and on for the past 15 years for ages 1 year to 14 years old. I volunteer on a regular basis at my son's school, and have worked with the students primarily with Math and English.

The difficulty comes from attempting to connect their intuitive understanding with the symbols on the paper. Many students think of these subjects as the memorization of formulas. Laid back, but encouraging.If a child is struggling, I don't think you should add fear and criticism to the situation. Having had Catholic nuns in all my grammer school days, pretty much put the "fear of God" into me, until I went on to public high school and college. then I was able to relax and embrace english and literature.
My BA degree was in Speech & Theatre. Who would have known that a shy kid like me would have excelled in public speaking, english, and theatre. I love the English language, even though I've had classes in French and Spanish. I started school when I was 4 years old (too early), and all my grade school years was challanged with education.
