Tutor: Math, Physics, and Chemistry.

I like to work one on one with students in a neutral location. Small groups are not out of the question however.
When I was studying engineering at University of Michigan, I took a job as a tutor at Washtenaw Community College. This was the most rewarding job I ever had. Since about the year 2000, I have been working as a freelance tutor in the subjects of math, chemistry and physics. I also tutor students in engineering courses. I generally work with college students or upper-class high school students. Normally I work in the Brighton/Howell Michigan area. I meet most students at a public library or coffee shop. My average rate is $50 per hour. This can be negotiated, however. I like to take the students ability to pay into consideration and will charge less per hour if advanced payment can be arranged.

I have been a tutor for 23 years and I have taught Adult Basic Education for 12 years. I am still continuing my education to receive a Masters degree and plan to get my PhD. I work for a community college and have done advising, enrollment, testing, phone directory, and student sevices. I have attended many professional development workshops on education.
Critical thinking skills and untraditional ways are what I focus on. However the way someone learns, I will try to set the individual up to show how they learn and work with them. Recently Retired Female Engineer

I am a recently retired engineer. I spent last summer working in a City of Detroit grade school as a tutor. About ten years ago I taught Environmental Science classes at Wayne State as an adjunct faculty. This is the only official experience I have had teaching/tutoring; however during my academic career I frequently explained course material to fellow students and to study partners. During the 30 years I worked as a Chemist and as an Engineer I was frequently asked to explain technical information to a lay audience since I seemed to have a knack for doing just that.
I would classify my tutoring style as "old school." Ladies and gentlemen, the best way to learn a problem-based subject such as math or chemistry is to solve problems; there are no short cuts.

A Little Bit About Me...

To learn math is to do math. In order to do math or chemistry one must know how to read the subject material. I specifically teach students to read the text allowing them the tools to be able to teach themselves. After the student reads each section (before our session) and takes notes he/she and I will then cover all of the material together and I will address any questions the student might have. Patience and flexibility are the keys. You can't explain a concept the same way to each student and expect each one will understand. Some students need extra time to grasp the material so it's important not to progress unless there's certainty of complete comprhension. Encouragement is also necessary which will build their confidence, and a confident student is a better one.
My BS in Civil Engineering provided me with an extensive education of advanced Mathematics such as Calculus, Dynamics, Physics, and Statics. I worked for 10 years in the field which included design of subdivisions, site condominiums, and other developments. Correspondence between review engineers on projects required proper writing and grammatical skills. Since October of 2009,I have worked part-time for a Metro Detroit tutoring agency.
