As I mentioned, I have 3 younger siblings-I've been helping with homework forever, and I understand the frustrations that naturally occur when concepts seem elusive. Additionally, I am completely aware that I'm not perfect; I've taken a lot of upper level, difficult courses, and know what it's like to have trouble, sometimes with the easiest concepts. However, consistent interactions with a teacher helped me to find success in so many gruesome classes (Advanced Computational Biology, anyone?). My love of mathematics and science has driven me to where I am today. I have earned a BS in chemistry and have just graduated from MSU's medical school. This has provided me with an extensive background in the basic as well as the more complex maths and sciences needed to achieve the successes I have. As an undergraduate majoring in chemistry, I was provided with many opportunities to use my abilities to help those classmates of mine who had questions or needed extra help. During the last 8 years, I have had the opportunity to tutor students in chemistry, basic mathematics, and work with elementary school afterschool program for at risk children. I believe that teaching styles need to be flexible to the student. I have worked with a very wide variety of students, from the severely limited autistic youth to the highly gifted medical student. While approach and focus might vary for the individual or subject matter the essence remains the same. I try to envision at least 3 different ways of approaching a problem, I discuss material but let the students ask questions which I then tailor my explanations toward. Everyone sees a problem slightly differently and if you allow yourself an open mind and creative thinking often you can help them break through a difficult problem because you are able to see it their way.
