I'm here to help!

I double-majored in biology in chemistry in undergrad, so the field of science and medicine is my first love and my strength. I have also received a Masters of Public Health Degree in Epidemiology, and have since completed my 2nd year of medical school. I have always had a strong affinity for math and english as well. I have a published thesis paper that was constructed and presented as required for my masters curriculum. I have been tutoring since I was in high school, and have tutored elementary to college level courses.
I have a relaxed, stress-free teaching style, while staying on task and topic. I make sure the pupils really understand the material by breaking things down to the basics, and reviewing the foundations. After reviewing and application of the concepts, I have my students switch roles and "teach" me the material. I believe if you can explain the material to someone ... read more

We do not all learn to speak, read and write languages in the same way. Some of us learn by mostly hearing or saying; some of us learn by mostly seeing and looking; and some of us learn by mostly doing, using touch and moving parts of our bodies or things. I use all three ways to learn when helping others improve their English. I use hearing, seeing and doing. I check what students learn in one way with the other two ways of learning. There is a name for this kind of teaching. It is called the neuro-linguistic approach to teaching English.
For the last seven years, I have taught and tutored English to adults who speak other languages. In the last two years, I have added tutoring students in grades 3-12. While teaching English as a Second Language at a local college, I was a lead lab instructor for two years. Students work with me on pronunciation, reading, writing and grammar. The ... read more

Concurrently, I worked with University Instructors teaching SAT Prep, Math and Reading Buddies Programs, and a summer school enrichment program. After obtaining my Provisional license with three endorsements (English, Journalism, and Speech Communications), I began my career as a full-time teacher. As a first-year teacher and yearbook adviser, I won trophy class with the VHSL. I enjoy being creative in the classroom, integrating technology, and engaging students in regular and advanced English classes. A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy instructing others, especially through the use of analogies and personal stories. Growing up in a very different, rural environment often provides me with various examples and personal situations that are often pertinent to the subject at hand. In addition, I actively attempt to connect the subject material with non-academic subjects, such as musical interests or athletics, two areas which I also enjoy. I understand the concerns students have with being assisted by a tutor and attempt to make that process as fulfilling as it is necessary.
As a college graduate, I decided to pursue graduate studies in the field of Historical Archaeology and History. A recipient of a B.S. in Anthropology/History and a minor in Biology from Radford University, this new focus is a continuation of my concentrations from my undergraduate career. I am fluent in US and World History as well as fund ... read more

I have a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry from the College of William and Mary and will be returning to finish my Masters Degree at Georgetown University in January of 2011. I graduated with a 3.2 GPA from William and Mary and currently have a 3.7 GPA at Georgetown. During my time at William and Mary I worked as a tutor for Calculus, Biology and Chemistry. I enjoyed working with my fellow students to help them achieve. I have extensive experience tutoring and love helping others.
The most important skill I can teach someone is how. I believe in not only helping students to understand the material but instilling in them a joy of learning. I want students to understand how to get to the answers, why the answers are correct and how to do it themselves. This skill boosts self esteem and confidence. I also believe that it is very important to teach study skills and techniques th ... read more

More About This Tutor...

In 2007, I graduated from Penn State with a plan of attending graduate school for Creative Writing. I was devastated when I received three rejection letters from schools I admired. Instead of letting that devastation break me down, I accepted a job as an SAT/ACT Preparation Teacher at a learning center. After several weeks of successful, inspiring interactions with high school students in one-on-one sessions, I knew that the circuitous path that led me to this job was truly my destiny: I was meant to be a teacher. From the moment I had that realization on, I took all the steps I needed to become a certified teacher with a Master's in the Art of Teaching. I continue my journey daily as I student teach in the Newport News School District.
A year ago, I had the honor of substituting as an Assistant Teacher with an amazing kindergarten teacher. I learned then that she maintains her res ... read more

My teaching style is very simple, but effective. I merely talk to the student to find out where he or she is having difficulty, and work to find ways to remedy the problem. We will go over the concepts and do some exercises that will help to answer questions and deepen understanding of the source material.
I am a William and Mary graduate with a BS in Chemistry, with several years of programming experience from developing my own computer games. In addition I performed laboratory research at the College of William and Mary for a thesis and have 2 years of experience tutoring in Elementary Spanish, Computer Science, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry.

My teaching style embraces differences among learners to understand why they respond the way they do. As an instructor, I want to understand how members/groups learn and maintain the balance in the classroom. I provide learning through a variety of ways such as powerpoint presentations, lectures to supplement the weekly readings, provide additional resources to support the material. The most important benefit that I can offer my students is to be accessible to them at all times. Assessments would reflect the learning objectives through problem-solving, open discussions, group work, role play and journal writing.
