Biology and Chemistry Tutoring

Hello, I am a recent UAB graduate. I graduated May 2013 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with minor's in Psychology and Chemistry. I am currently in the process of applying to dental schools. Although I've had no previous experience as a paid tutor, I often get asked by fellow classmates for help with these sciences. Also I volunteer at an Elementary school in Fairfield, AL through the non-profit organization Better Basics. So I am already accustomed to working/helping younger kids (K-6th) do homework and prepare for tests. My younger brother is a sophomore in high school so I feel capable of helping high school ages as well. As I mentioned earlier, most of my tutoring experience comes from helping fellow college classmates and I am confident I can help you or your child achieve the grades desired, regardless of age.

Possession is 9/10 of the law.. Description is 9/10 of saw.

I have been writing for my whole life, and have a love of the art that is description. Since Mich of humanity's understanding is based on metaphor, description and its subtleties is a key part of any writing process, be it creative or instructional. My favorite form of writing is creative, however I also enjoy writing essays and other pieces based on fact. No matter what form of writing you endeavor to do, getting your point across through description is paramount. I have placed and won poetry contests, and have written many essays of undergraduate and graduate levels.

My teaching style is interactive. I believe in fully engaging the student in the teaching-learning process. Students are more receptive to learning when they take ownership in the educational process. I am very patient and goal oriented. I know all children can learn and if given the proper set of learning conditions they can achieve educational heights that often surpasses their pre-conceived notions of learning barriers. Knowledge is power and I seek to aid and assist the learner in harnessing that power so as to become a life-long learner and ultimately a productive citizen.
For twenty-five years I successfully taught a comprehensive curriculum to elementary students (grades three through eighth). More About This Tutor...

I do not have a particular teaching style because I don't believe that a single method works for everyone. Therefore, I operate from an Occam's Razor perspective -- whatever is the simplest solution is the best. I believe I am very empathetic and perceptive, which would enable me to determine what works best for each student.
Admittedly, I have no direct (structured) teaching experience. However, I have nearly five years of experience in the journalism field, and during that time I've mentored a number of fledgling college and high school journalists. And while journalism and political science are my two specialties -- given that I have degrees in both -- I also have a fair amount of expertise in the tangential fields of English and History.

More About This Tutor...

I completed all course work for a masters of physics at University of Alabama at Birmingham, only lacking the thesis. G.P.A. at the end of the course work was 3.65. Along the way, as I finished the graduate course work (and in order to pay the rent) I did ad-hoc tutoring with a number of undergrad students along with a more formal semester of 'coaching' a class of undergrads in their regular physics class. This entailed going over problems with them, showing them how to correctly formulate solutions. On top of this, I worked, formally, as a graduate teaching assistant for 2 years, and I taught in the Birmingham public schools (high school level) as a physics teacher. All told, quite a lot of teaching involved with all levels of students.
My teaching style is easy to describe; I consider myself a 'coach' and as such I don't (and wont) give the students the answer to a particula ... read more
