I believe that the purpose of tutoring is to help students help themselves, or to assist or guide them to the point at which they become an independent learner. I have been a piano teacher for 29 years, teaching privately in my home studio. I am insatiable in my pursuit of knowledge, and have wide interests. My first degree in history and philosophy influenced me in how I approached all other fields of study. I am never satisfied with a superficial knowledge of anything I undertake. My experience with other cultures has been a huge influence in how I approach knowledge and how I approach teaching. Stereotypically low proficiency in writing capabilities in many students is due to the fact that many of them are not expected to produce nearly enough original written materials of any length during their public school years. They are also far more likely to become successful writers if they will discipline themselves to read a great deal.
