My comments on tutoring Creative Writing : Published primarily in Poetry

My primary goal is to help students understand the "why" of studies. "Why" do we look for differentials in calculus? "Why" do we describe imagery in poetry instead of just saying how we feel? "Why" do we enter compound keys in some SQL tables but not others? "Why" do we need a conclusion on our essay? If we understand why we do something, we are far more likely to remember how to do it. I also strive to keep the homework the work of the student. They do the work, I guide them to the correct (or at least best) answer. Students are more likely to remember how to complete the problem if they are in the driver seat, not the tutor.

Struggling with Math/Science? Local Scientist Offering Help.

Most of my experience stems from my Bachelor of Arts degree at Wartburg College, Waverly, IA. As a Biology major, I have a good background in Life Sciences and Math. I have several study techniques that helped me succeed in college, as well as my current career as a Scientist Integrated DNA technologies in Coralville, IA. Some of my past experiences include working at a summer camp for two years as well as two years in an Emergency Room at a small hospital. A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy getting to know my students' strengths and areas in need of support, so that I may better facilitate learning in those areas. By learning of their strengths, I have access to their interests, which guide my choice of materials. I believe students are more motivated as learners if information is presented to them in interesting forms.
As an ESL, grades 9-12 teacher, I am very familiar with identifying students' individual strengths and areas in need of support. Every one of my students learns differently. I must design curriculum that can be easily differentiated. This makes me an excellent tutor, because this is what it takes to tutor. As a college student, I tutored many other graduate students that were attaining their degrees in this country and needed to hone their English language skills before returning to their home nations.
