Local Chess Tutor - $20/hr

I learned chess very young but didn't start really getting into it until the first day of high school. My homeroom teacher had a chess board on his desk and asked me to play; I accepted his challenge and he then only took 4 moves to put me in checkmate. Three months later, i was finally able to beat him after heavy amounts of practice and lots of games with online opponents along with my fellow classmates. A couple months after that, with the same amount of practice, I could beat him without a problem. I constantly preach this anecdote because it shows that it doesn't matter where you start or how good you are at something, you can accomplish great things if you put your mind to it and practice, practice, practice! Of course, it's always easier to have a tutor or coach to guide you along the way to teach you right from wrong and show you what to practice, just as a teacher would make you ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that the most effective teacher is one who guides the students to finding the correct answers. Instead of simply giving out answers, a teacher should encourage students and help them along the process for them to find out the solutions on their own. By overseeing this learning process and helping along the way, the teacher ensures that the student will learn that they are capable of learning the material and further increase their confidence in academics.
I obtained a strong liberal arts education where I was able to experience and learn about a wide range of academic topics. However, I have a strong focus and specialization in the sciences with a BA in both Biology and Chemistry with a Mathematics minor. Math and science has been a strong area of mine, as I was a Supplemental Instructor for a genetics course for two semesters, as well as being a Laboratory Assistant that ... read more

I believe that each student is unique. Therefore, a variety of teaching methods within a supportive learning environment are required to address each student's uniqueness. I have found that students relate to analogies, practical examples, discovery, computer simulations, and real life applications as opposed to straight memorization of content. Above all, the optimal blend of patience and guidance are required to motivate each student to achieve success. I have worked in a variety of educational roles and have experienced that, as an educator, there is no greater feeling than to see a student's eyes light up after a concept is grasped. For me, this is the ultimate achievement of student success!
My experiences in schools, hospitals and business provide me with the diversity to instruct students in subjects, such as math, general science, biology, business concepts and English ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Obtaining a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering has exposed me to advanced courses of Math and Science, two subjects which have always fascinated me. I have pursued and achieved excellence in these areas all through my school years and my post graduation career as an industrial engineer has only advanced my knowledge in these areas. English language has been a strong interest of mine since an early age and I have actively cultivated that interest. My reading, writing and grammatical skills have only improved over the years with all the reports, theses and presentations that I had prepared during the course of my education. I have previous and current experience of tutoring students in Math, English and Science.
As a recipient of higher levels of education, I know the career opportunities that such an education opens up later in life. And I am motivated to share my knowledge an ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a teacher, I feel that my mastery of content and skills help students to not only learn to the best of their ability, but learn through a variety of learning styles. I help students become motivated and interested in all topics I bring to the classroom, which gives each of them an opportunity to contribute and participate throughout each lesson. My ability to differentiate and modify lessons to reach each child is another strong point in my teaching. I feel that everyone can learn, and with modifications where needed, all will succeed in the classroom. Finally, through collaboration with fellow staff and with the resource available, I can find a way to help all students when they need extra help.
In the past four years, as a substitute teacher, I have instructed a wide variety of grade levels and subjects, including non-core subjects. I have also, monitored progress of assi ... read more

More About This Tutor...

In my tutoring of students in reading and math, I have assessed each child and from the assessments I have build a program that address the child's needs. Some of the materials that I have used are project read materials, open court phonics,Linda Bell's materials. So, I have the greatest interest in finding areas that a child needs help with and then finding materials and methods to solve their problems.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a holder of two Journalism degrees I have been through the extensive rigors of college and know what it takes to get assignments done properly and haned in on time. I feel that the experience of having just been in college would help benefit any college student seeking help in certain areas of their education. Having two journalism degrees has taught me the grammatical skills to write for numerous media outlets, while also being able to proofread and edit as well. Having worked for the Boys & Girls Club in Janesville, I would work with elementary and high school kids with their homework on a daily basis, covering every primary subject.
I come from a large family of teachers, so teaching and mentoring students is in my blood. Receiving help with homework and research was always a top priority for my parents. The key component that my parents have passed along to me, regard ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I was an exceptionally driven high school student, taking the most difficult schedule my small private school would offer. My course work included AP calculus and AP US government, on both exams I received good marks. In college I studied a wide variety of classes in pursuit of a degree in the liberal arts. My main foci were history, foreign languages and English literature and grammar while maintaining a love for the sciences and mathematics. I have spent the last two years teaching English as a second language in China. My time there was spent teaching the oral skills and tutoring in reading and writing.
As a student I enjoyed most the teachers who facilitated learning. Teachers who lead students on a road of discovery as they learned, who taught me how to think and not what to think. I model my teaching after the same style I enjoyed as a student. Helping a student disco ... read more
