When working with children one on one or in groups, I personally like to get to know the child on a level that will help me understand which type of teaching method to use. All children learn on different levels and different ways.
While in high school and college I have always held a passion with working with children. While enrolled in college I volunteered with the Boys and Girls Club near my university. When volunteering I assisted kids with Reading, Writing, and Math homework they may have after school hours. Upon graduating, I worked as a Reading Tutor. When I teach writing, I emphasize -- and ensure that the students practice -- rewriting. Not even professional writers get it right the first time. I also encourage students to enrich their writing by reading as often as possible. Young people who take writing seriously are preparing for a successful college career. Post-secondary students who learn to write effectively are more employable than those who view writing as a technical obstacle. One of the most common complaints I hear about college graduates in the workplace is that they cannot write clearly and get to the point. As a University of Southern Maine graduate, I look forward to having my own classroom where I can touch many students' lives.
