A Little Bit About Me...

I have tutored on a volunteer basis with the Holyoke Tutor/Mentor Program for more than a year. I have also tutored privately. My experience has been with adults, however, I would like to add experience working with secondary school students. I can help with SAT's, MCAS, and just provide support for a student who needs some extra help.
I like to get a sense of what the student already knows and try to build on that knowledge.

Ashley Frankian- Special Educator, Ell instructor

I am a strategic based teacher that enhances my students learning through finding their own particular learning style. Each student has and individualized learning approach to their studies. Once they find what works for them, they will succeed. It is my job as an educator to help them find that out. I like to use a multi modality approach so that students learn all different types of learning styles, this way they may pick and choose certain styles that work for them. For example, If the students are writing about a short story they have read, to help them get their thoughts on to paper, I would assist them with graphic organizers to prompt them to list of jot down vocabulary words or important people places or things in the story however, in a manner that helps them to do this with a proper beginning, middle and end. All of this is visually designed on the graphic organizer to help the ... read more

I am currently employed as a technical advisor for Charter Communications for video and Internet. I left school to start a family bakery in Vermont followed by award winning bakeries in Northern California and Utah. After retiring from baking, I completed my education at Vermont Tech with a degree in Information Technology.
I enjoy passing on my skills and knowledge to others. I have trained many apprentices in baking as a professional and conducted many classes. Every day I am teaching customers how to use their television equipment and their computers correctly. I am very patient and enjoy the rewards of successfully passing on my knowledge to others. With a little work, you will get there!

Being an undergraduate at WPI and haven taken several Advanced Placement classes in areas outside of math and science, I consider myself a very well rounded student. I was also strongly considered for a MASH program here at the University, or "Math and Science Help", as a Section Leader/Tutor. Going through a lower-middle class urban high school, I was known as that "smart kid" and would often led study groups outside of class to prepare for tests.
I have struggled with the areas I am not proficient in, so I understand what it is to be frustrated and confused. My teaching style is presenting various approaches to the same idea, in hopes that at least one will click, and better yet, each approach with solidify an idea or concept that much more.

I am a doer who has shared his knowledge and experience in a variety of ways. When I worked as a photographer and filmmaker, I taught those subjects at many different institutions, from an after-school program for elementary school kids to NYU Graduate School. For many years now, I have worked as a science writer and editor. I mentor many newly minted Chinese scientists and engineers who work for IBM in Beijing, teaching them both English grammar and the proper form and style for peer-reviewed scientific papers they are writing. I developed and taught courses in Communications and Technical and Professional Writing for Marist College, Poughkeepsie NY.

Creativity in this job is a must and I feel you need to be on the same level as your students to engage them in what you want to teach them. Not all students learn in the same fashion so I feel teaching the same facts but in different ways to target your audience is very key in education. As a 2008 graduation of Westfield State College with a Bachelor of Arts in English Education I have enjoyed being a high school English teacher for two years. My training prior to my career involves experience with English at all four high school levels, drama (both academic and extra curricular,) speech methods and instruction, and urban school environments. I generally work with students with special needs in the regular education classes. What I often find in Geometry is that many of the students are lacking or forgetting the basic Algebra skills that they need to succeed in the classroom, so I do a lot of remediation, if necessary. I like to use hands-on approaches, and I am persistent with difficult students.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe I have a natural ability to work with students of all ages. Tutoring and being able to help students understand certain topics is very rewarding for me. I truly enjoy doing helping others. My teaching style is somewhat laid-back, but students know that I expect them to learn to their fullest potential. I believe in using several learning styles in the classroom and being to identify which students require different ways of learning. If something doesn't work in the classroom, I will do what it takes to make each student understand.
I began my tutoring experience in the fall of 2009 with a program called Breakthrough Manchester. It serves underprivileged students in the area who do not have the resources to succeed. They ranged from grade 5 to 8. With Breakthrough I worked one-on-one with students as well as in a classroom setting in which I conducted my own lessons ... read more
