I am a firm believer that strict memorization does not allow the student to broaden their ability to solve problems of various flavors. I encourage the student to understand the concepts to avoid tedious memorization. Additionally I believe children learn best in an environment where they do not feel intimidated or nervous. I believe by working closely with the student and making learning fun I can help the student avoid becoming discouraged. This helps to prevent the chain reaction of test failures. It also prevents the student from giving up on the subject.

I have been a full-time (and quite busy) professional tutor for the past five years. While living in California in 2007, I was employed by the San Diego Board of Education as a tutor for the AVID program, a group style tutoring initiative to assist high school students with difficulties and increase their motivation to learn. I am a recent graduate with a Bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry followed by a Master's degree in plant pathology and have a passion for biology, math, and statistics. I believe in inquiry based learning, or teaching any subject by incorporating the student's natural curiosity and drawing connections to their interests. I don't taking a long time to teach a student how to approach a single problem or concept and foster their understanding of the material so that they will understand how to approach the problem on their own. In other words, I put energy into explaining why they should do something so that they can reason through it themselves in a test situation.
