Reflecting back on the years when I attended high school, I struggled with math. Once I was accepted to NC A&T, I realized that I had developed a fear of math and did not understand basic algebraic concepts. I have been tutoring since I was 13 years old. Parents of my peers always approached me to teach their son or daughter. After I completed high school with a 4.0 GPA I was hired at a professional tutoring school. There I worked for nearly 10 years with a loyal student base many of whom I taught the entire time. I taught kids from when they were in elementary school all the way until high school. Some students were ineligible to go to normal school so I was their only teacher for years. In that time I managed to get these students up to 4 years ahead in certain subjects like math and science. I've also taught students that could not even speak english when they came to me and in a short amount of time they were fluent.

A Little Bit About Me...

For over twenty years I have taught at the college level, with extensive expertise in teaching the liberal arts to engineering majors. Much of my work is directed towards teaching research, writing, editing, and analytical skills. I have expertise in writing, editing, research, and most importantly, synthesizing information. While in college, I tutored for three years at a home for 'wayward' boys. My own daughter had some learning disabilities (auditory dyslexia) and though I would not take full credit for this, she is now a successfull first year college student (with a 3.75 average her first semester) and an avid reader. I feel strongest about my skills in teaching students who 'hate' school; writing; alternative ways of looking at math problems.

My teaching style is adapted to meet the student’s needs. I firmly believe that each child learns differently. I think students either learn kinesthetically, visually, or auditorally, for the most part. I think it is my job as a teacher to find out which style best suits the student and adapt my style accordingly. I also think that while I am trying to help students develop skills in their weak areas, I need to be focusing on their strengths and building their self-esteem.
