My comments on tutoring Poetry : I have taught students about poetry, plays and short stories for 20 years. I am patient and understanding. I am a poet myself!

In my experience, the majority of students are highly motivated. This is, for me, the key to success. A Little Bit About Me...

I have experience working with students from Kindergarten through adult education. My earliest teaching experience was with primary grade children (K-2) in an inner-city school district. I taught basic skills to incarcerated men in a NJ Correctional Facility. I have experience working with first generation college students in need of remedial coursework before advancing to college level courses. I'm currently working (part-time) teaching GED writing and math, 2 evenings a week.
I combine a variety of teaching styles to accommodate student's learning style. When it comes to GED instruction, I would say that math is my strong suit. I always try to find examples of how certain skills could be applied to real life experiences.

A Little Bit About Me...

My main focus when teaching is to "keep it interesting". Students struggle with relating to their teachers and administrators in a classroom or school setting; either because the material in their opinion may be "boring" or the style of teaching is not corresponding with the students style of learning. I focus on starting small and helping the student develop on their own. For example, when I teach how to write a strong essay, we write many drafts of an introduction. Then, we write many drafts of body paragraphs. Last, we would focus on writing a conclusion. Then, by working seperately on all of an essay's parts, the combined product is much stronger. The art of teaching is similiar to building a house: you start with an idea, then a foundation, and finally the framework.
I volunteered at the Ocean County Library writing center for four years and helped my peers construct, organize, and layout essays. I also proofread, edited, and helped in the creative process of their essays.
