I have led several small groups of teenagers and young adults in Biblical studies at Prairie Hill Evangelical Free Church, several musical groups in practicing and performing, and a summer-long book club at Crown College. In gaining my Associate of Arts degree from Crown College, I also led many study groups on subjects ranging from Chemistry to Physics, English Literature to Creative Writing.

I encourage students to learn by doing and by thinking. So, rather than give the student a list of rules to memorize, I prefer to give an example of a rule and then have the student interpret the example and implement it in a new situation, afterward reflecting on what they did to see how it helped (or did not help) them learn. My experience in tutoring began in high school when I volunteered for my local library, in a program aimed towards improving students’ reading ability. Having had considerable difficulty learning to read myself, I felt it was important that I attempt to pass this on to others. When I entered Knox College I was focusing on English, and ended up helping my fellow students with writing and editing their papers.
I have always sought to lead rather than force something upon the student by rote. Most important is to present the information in a way that is both interesting and memorable.
