I am an Electrical Engineer currently working for IBM as an logic design engineer. I have tutoring experience for 10 years. In my case, I had the good fortune of having teachers from my early school days who helped me strengthen my motive to learn by engaging my mind directly in the educative process. They provided a purpose or rationale to direct my energies towards learning activities to engage in thinking and questioning, and cultivated the inquisitiveness in me. This helped me grapple with the topics’ content and concepts at a more substantive and intellectually challenging level. It also helped me better understand on how to relate lessons to our lives and provided a roadmap to know where I was leading and what to expect along the way. Every person has different learning styles and it is important to recognize in that person what helps them understand more fully. Whether it is diagram and pictures, breaking a complex problem into many simple parts, comparing similar examples that are familiar to the person, or simply taking the time to make sure that the child feels comfortable saying "I don't know". All of these are useful tools, but in my opinion by far the most important is patience. Remaining patient when someone doesn't understand is the absolute most important thing.
