Special Education is one of my top subjects! I have worked with students of all ages and all types of disabilities, and have used different strategies to meet each student's personal needs.

My classroom experience with Special Education started while in college at Illinois State University, where I gained very valuable experience teaching in a variety of classrooms. For one semester, I taught in a junior high life-skills classroom where we practiced daily living skills and went out into the community so the students could practice skills such as locating items in a store, paying with money, and crossing the street. Then I spent my Fieldbase semester at two different schools. The first one was 4th and 5th grade students with learning disabilities. I have taught 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. I also have experience in 7th and 8th grade. My strengths are teaching math strategies such as facts, multi-step problems and algebra. I have a passion for reading and writing instruction. I am highly qualified to teach reading fluency, phonics/ word attack, comprehension and vocabulary. I have a variety of high interest activities to help students build their confidence in both reading and writing.

A Little Bit About Me...

My experience includes teaching college English for three years. The courses I taught (Composition I and II) required me to know the mechanics of English (grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.) as well as various forms of writing (narrative, expository, compare/contrast, cause/effect, research-supported, etc.). I also have experience teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). For the past several months, I have worked as a substitute teacher for kindergarten through 12th grade. Substituting has given me the experience of teaching all ages and backgrounds in a variety of subjects. In 2007, I graduated with a Master of Science degree in Adult Education. In 2002, I graduated with two degrees: English-Professional Writing and Geography.
