I prefer sitting at the student's elbow, with the assigned work in between us, focusing on it together. I talk about "it" rather than "you" to avoid making the student self-conscious. Writing can always be improved, and each student has areas of strength and weakness. I try to pick one area that needs the most attention, and focus on it. When there is significant improvement, I move on to the next area of weakness. Pointing out all of a student's mistakes and weaknesses at once drains morale, and that is counterproductive. Working on one area at a time keeps the student from being overwhelmed. I like to have the student read out loud to me, so that we can both see what needs improvement. Starting from high school I have always been passionate about young children learning. As a young child I was fortunate enough to have people in my life care about my education and help me succeed. I have done private tutoring at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, UT for almost three years teaching Spanish to the senior missionary couples and Mission Presidents and their wives. I have also volunteered to tutor at a number of different elementary schools in both Provo and Colorado tutoring at the kindergarten, 1st, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade levels. I feel that repetition is one key that helps students grasp difficult concepts. I start by helping the student understand what the question is asking. Then I will do a problem step by step, showing the student what I am doing. Next, I will have the student do the same problem, but recreate the steps that I had shown them, guiding them along the way. After this type of practice, we will move on to similar problems, using the same steps that we previously used. I have found that this system helps me learn the information and retain it.
