A Little Bit About Me...

I feel that repetition is one key that helps students grasp difficult concepts. I start by helping the student understand what the question is asking. Then I will do a problem step by step, showing the student what I am doing. Next, I will have the student do the same problem, but recreate the steps that I had shown them, guiding them along the way. After this type of practice, we will move on to similar problems, using the same steps that we previously used. I have found that this system helps me learn the information and retain it. I will be patient because I understand that these concepts do not come easily. My teaching style can be easily adapted to meet the student’s needs.

While pursuing my own studies in college, I realized that I not only love learning but that I love to increase learning in others as well. Because of this, I spent many hours throughout college volunteering to tutor calculus and chemistry students. I am a believer in the socratic method. As an Avid tutor we were taught to employ this method to help students understand concepts. I think that it is better to ask questions, and guide students' thinking rather than just giving them the answer, or telling them how to do a problem. Simply telling someone how to do something or giving them the answer prevents that person from figuring it out for his or herself. If the student can figure it out for themselves they will achieve a much better level of understanding.
