My comments on tutoring American History : Colonial. Civil War. WWII. Civil Rights.

I have a Masters of Library Science. I've been a Library Branch Manager and librarian in a public library for over 14 years, and have experience helping people from diverse backgrounds. I have successfully helped people with citizenship, resume writing, filling out job applications, interview skills, basic computer classes, database research, assembling bibliographic sources, writing, school reading lists, locating literary criticisms and helping with preparation of science fair projects. Published author under pseudonym.
I prefer the student to have a hands-on experience so that they can learn how to do the subject for themselves. I provide guidance, suggestions and best practices. I am patient, try to put the person at ease, and treat all people with respect.

My comments on tutoring American History : History enthusiast

I am a recent college graduate looking to help other students. I wasn't a typical student. I had to try different ways to understand certain subjects. I feel that education isn't one size fits all; every student has his/her own way of learning. My goal is to open your mind to the possibilities and knowledge it stores. The information is there waiting for you to use it. All we have to do is tap into it!
My teaching style is based on the student. We do a couple of activities so that I can gage where we stand and go from there.

More About This Tutor...

I am a student of history and believe that knowledge acquisition comes from interest and enthusiasm on the part of the learner. This interest comes from having an instructor who them selves is a learner. A partnership in the tasks being presented usually results in the student wanting to understand the information and making connections. To promote critical thinking I present the material in a global manner, allowing the learner to relate the information/skill to the real-world.
Creative, innovative, and interesting lessons are my forte. I am experienced in providing a constructivist-based approach to knowledge acquisition. Hands-on lesson promote student involvement and increase the development of student responsibility towards their education. I have found that a cross-curriculum approach to the material being presented fosters true understanding and relevance.

I am reactive. I adjust to the learning style that the student requires for them to learn efficiently.I am a firm believer that all children learn better through different methods, and this should be utilized for their sake
After receiving my degree from the University of Houston, I substituted for a semester. Then, for three years I taught English in South Korea to children raging from five to 19 years of age which helped me to tone my teaching styles.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is thus: First engage the student about what subject he likes, engage in small talk and then tutor the assignments. ALways praise the student and point his or her strong abilities and plus tell the student they can do this assignment. First I let the student try the assignment and then I will jump in and help.

My teaching style conforms to the learning style of the individual. Since no two people learn the same it is impossible to tutor the same way. I feel that once I have found a way to spark their interest and how they learn, it is much easier to help them acheive their goals and grasp the material. Many times the main goal is to teach the student how to learn, as many do not understand that function. Once they understand how they learn it becomes fun and easy.
As a late bloomer to my education, I understand the importance of completeing an education at the earliest time. I currently hold a BS degree in business with an emphasis on international markets. This degree has helped me to better understand and appreciate economics, business math and accounting. In pusuit of this I have written papers from a 2 page summary to an 80 page thesis. In the past years I have tutored in Spa ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My passion for education blossomed while volunteering as a tutor with Somali refugee children in Pittsburgh, PA during college. I worked with families in their homes to develop English reading, writing, and speaking skills. After graduating with a B.A. in History and Political Science I joined Teach For America, where I taught first grade for two years and substitute taught pre-kindergarten through fifth grade for one year. A major focus while teaching first grade was developing literacy skills and instilling a love and enthusiasm for reading and writing in my students.
The most important thing about my teaching style is that I believe every child can achieve academic excellence and can be interested in learning. I believe that it is up to me, as a teacher or a tutor, to engage the student(s). A huge part of this is being very transparent about where the student starts, what our go ... read more
