A NOVELIST: HOW TO DEVELOP A LOVE FOR THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.

The education of children is of paramount interest to me, and during my work as a tutor at the Audubon School in South Central, Los Angeles, I realized the importance of making education personal. Many students do not have access to the one on one aspect of instruction that can prove paramount to the development of individuated talents. For this reason, I consider the position of tutor to be of utmost importance. My love for art, and my compassion for learning, comes across in the way I work and the way I teach others. As a case example, while I was working at the Audubon School I discovered one of its students, currently in the seventh grade, had dyslexia, a condition that was seriously hampering his development within the domains of reading and comprehension. This moment was eye opening for me. I realized then the overarching value of personal interaction between student and teac ... read more

Experience in the study of British and American Literature, also have made a study of History in America and Britain as well during undergraduate coursework. During my Master's I studied British Literature and was a teaching assistant. During that time I spent two years teaching composition and argumentation at Bowling Green State University to cover college level essay writing which required both classroom and individual tutoring outside of class. Subjects for that course included a wide array of topics with a focus more on structure and the strength of the student's argument than the content or theme of the paper. I can handle any topic of essay writing as a result and will be able to bring out the core structural and grammatical needs for the paper.

Your Child Needs Help? I Am the One Who Can Help Them!!!

I am a direct/explicit instructional teacher or instructor. Explicit instruction is broken up into stages that follow a sequence. The sequence of teaching/learning is as follows: first setting a purpose for learning, then telling students what to do, then showing them how to do it, and finally guiding them with hands-on application of the new item that was learned. Reading Comprehension & Fluency Strategies: Fluency- 1. Focus on phonemic and alphabetic awareness 2. Teaching the meaning of learning simple to complex words 3. Give strategies to increase the speed of students reading aloud Comprehension- I focus on the five close reading strategies that support Common Core learning. 1. Number the paragraphs that you will be reading 2. Chunk the text 3. Underline and circle with a purpose 4. Write in the margin what each paragraph is saying 5. Poetry is one of my top subjects!

I've been writing for a while. I made my own short film in 8th grade. I wrote, directed, acted, filmed, and edited the short film I made. I have also written several poems and stories that are original ideas. I'm not afraid to stand out or take chances. The most important thing about being a writer and a person is to take a chance.

Poetry is one of my top subjects!

I have a degree in English an Communications which makes me proficient in understanding literature, and how it is received by the public. I was a writing tutor for three years in college tutoring people of many different backgrounds, many of which achieved success to a point of no longer needing to be tutored.
A mix of hands on and hands off learning. Highly fond of the socratic method of teaching by guiding the pupil in the direction they need to go and letting them discover the solution organically. Direction and help are given directly when needed.

Old Soldier who likes teaching English

I taught for 9 yrs at the 1159 US Army Reserve Forces School. I helped soldiers get promoted to SSG, SFC, & MSG by providing them with skills in writing correspondence, public speaking, lesson planning & class preparation for delivery in both a classroom & tactical (field) environment. I also provided remedial training for soldiers needing additional work in writing, lesson planning & class presentation.
I told my students there was no "wrong" way to present class material. They were told they would be videotaped & critiqued by their class members..BUT their presentation would be on their military specialty (eg. a Motor Pool SGT would do a class on vehicle maintenance)..thereby increasing the "comfort level" of the presenter & enhancing the knowledge of the class. The students would be taught to affirm each other & give each other positive "feed-back".

More About This Tutor...

I have a passion for working with learners. I think education needs to be individualized and it is important to take into consideration the needs of the student. No two people learn the same way and, as a teacher, it is my responsibility to understand how my students learn. I am a strong believer in helping my students come to understanding through questioning rather than answer-giving. When students are encouraged to think for themselves and follow their instincts, they become more active learners and find more value in the learning process. As they become more involved in their own learning, students will start to develop a deeper appreciation for their own education.
After earning my teaching certificate, I taught high school English for nine years. During that time I taught 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades, as well as concurrent enrollment courses for Jamestown Community C ... read more
