A Little Bit About Me...

I began teaching 22 years ago at a middle school and later taught high school when I relocated to the beach. I also tutored at a local community college. The most rewarding aspect of teaching and tutoring is when the lightbulb goes off at the crucial point of understanding in the student's mind. I have a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Masters Degree in Human Resource Management and School Leadership. Furthermore, I have 67 additional education credits pertaining to teaching, tutoring, communication and human resources. I feel it's important to stay abreast of current educational trends, research and developments which ultimately affect the teaching style and learning effectiveness of the individuals involved.
Each student is unique. Therefore, I use a variety of teaching styles, strategies, methods and techniques depending on the individual's needs and abilities. A ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Most of my primary education experience involved me in music. I played the piano for 16 years, cello for 9 and self taught the violin and some other instruments. I prefer tutoring with stringed instruments. I then transitioned to sports like tennis and soccer. In college, after changing degrees a couple times, I graduated with a BS in Biology, minored in Chemistry with a Pre-Med certificate. Currently I am working on my own to sell patents with an Israeli scientist. On the side, I study Russian and Hebrew.
I have private tutored almost all throughout college, mostly because I had many international friends in desperate need for English help. I taught English in Korea; the first 5 months being beginner English (to preschool to fourth graders) and the last 7 months I taught actual subjects children in America learn but at advanced levels (from 3rd grade to late middle school). I obtained a strong liberal arts education where I was able to experience and learn about a wide range of academic topics. However, I have a strong focus and specialization in the sciences with a BA in both Biology and Chemistry with a Mathematics minor. Math and science has been a strong area of mine, as I was a Supplemental Instructor for a genetics course for two semesters, as well as being a Laboratory Assistant that assisted students with questions or problems during genetics laboratory. I took a course entitled "Teaching Evolution" in which students developed their own teaching styles, specifically based in the scientific disciplines.
I believe that the most effective teacher is one who guides the students to finding the correct answers. Instead of simply giving out answers, a teacher should encourage students and help them along the process for them to find out the solutions ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

We all have certain teaching approaches that best suit our characters and personality styles. We must also have the flexibility to adjust to multiple, individualized learning styles. One strategy I personally employ is that of discussion and debate. Given a stimulating topic and good guiding questions, this can be a very effective way to have students develop arguments, challenge each other and think critically. It also gets a wider variety of students involved in the learning process and speaking during class. I also am a strong proponent of student-centered learning, whereby students take ownership of their own learning and speak as much as the teacher. Specifically, this might mean that students are responsible for summarizing or presenting certain material. This personal ownership, along with having to teach, typically results in better retention for the students. Students may presen ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

To be able to help students reach their goals, I have based my teaching philosophy on 3 responsibilities that I believe an educator has to their students: 1. An educator is responsible not to just instruct a student on a subject, but to teach them how to critically analyze a problem and provide them with the tools to identify solutions to future questions. 2. An educator should provide an open environment to work in allowing students to flourish. 3. An educator should be an advocate for the student. I focus my time with students to help them identify key information in their subject of interest and how to better retain it. I also believe in making the subject interesting to them, which will foster a better enjoyment of the subject.
While attaining my bachelors at Columbia University and my doctorate at the University of Chicago, I have had many opportunities to tutor and in ... read more
