I am Marthe Desir, a second year Civil Engineering at Florida A&M University. I am a recent Math tutor at my University, I enjoy tutoring Math, it is a passion. I love helping students understand Math.

I like to break down whatever skill I'm teaching in the simplest form at first. This means explaining the concept of the skill in a way that the student can understand what it is we are trying to do. I also try to use a pictorial representation of the skill if that is needed. After that I'll show them how I work a problem with that particular skill so they can see firsthand what the thought process is and the steps that are needed to use that particular skill whether it is adding fractions or solving equations, etc. Then I'll give the student a problem to do on their own while I guide them through the steps. If they get off on a particular step I'll correct them immediately and get them on the right path. Once I feel they understand what is going on and how to work a problem, I'll give them a problem to do without me watching them and see if they can get the answer right by themsel ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have tutored students of all ages and abilities in math and economics for six years. I have learned that teaching quite often involves more than helping students learn the topics listed on their syllabus. My most challenging and rewarding tutoring position involved working with learning disabled students. I became a mentor to many of these freshmen; teaching them study skills and helping them adjust to college life. Last summer, I taught Health Care Economics to forty University of Florida juniors and seniors. I was responsible for all aspects of the class including planning lectures, creating exams, and grading. I also became a sounding board for students wishing to discuss career choices and graduate school. At the conclusion of the course, I received exceptional student evaluations. I know that the extra time I have spent with my students has helped them become better studen ... read more

I believe patience is key when teaching difficult concepts. I also strive to present ideas from varied perspectives. For example, many mathematical constructions can be understood either geometrically, algebraically, or analytically. If a student has trouble with one type of explanation, presenting an alternative technique often leads to a deeper understanding of the material.
I have extensive experience tutoring college students in mathematics and physics. I have acted as a teacher's assistant at New College of Florida and worked in the TCC math lab. I have also tutored these subjects privately.

More About This Tutor...

While attending Florida A&M University I always had a passion for Mathematics, therefore my first year I took Honors Calculus I and received a grade of a 'B'. From that point I completed my Bachelor degree in Computer Information Systems and took my passion in math and began to work on my MEd in Secondary education. During that time I had the opportunity to substitute students in 6-12 grade in two different counties. I also completed my student teaching experience at Shiloh High School in Snellville, GA where I taught 9th-11th Algebra I & II and Geometry.
As an educator my teaching style is very laid back and easy going. I like my students to use there own knowledge to search for a solution while I give them a little bit of guidance. My non-threatening approach tends to win over students and helps them feel relax and not fear to ask questions. My goal is to improve all students in ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a person profoundly shaped by my educational experiences and thus believe in the importance of education, particularly in a person’s formative years. Throughout college, I often tutored individuals of all ages in an array of subjects. Elementary, middle, and high school, as well as college too. Upon graduating from UF I taught middle school mathematics for several years. It was certainly a fulfilling experience, and though I don’t teach full time any more, I have kept education and the habit of teaching with me. I have tutored individuals off and on throughout the years and recently was teaching classes of undergrad students on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). I like working with students and helping them to understand what they must.
I thoroughly enjoy the transmission of knowledge. What's more is that I find it challenging and fulfilling to figure out what hindrances and expe ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoyed tutoring while I was in college working in the math lab for three years. However, now that I have been actually teaching my very own students I have a better understanding of the basics of mathematics and I am a much better student myself.
I enjoy teaching and working with students. I now understand that all children learn on their own level and at their own pace. I am very easy going, but I insist that students do their homework and stay after school for extra help if they need it. I grade work off of understanding. It is not always finding the correct answer, but the process to get to the correct answer. I believe that a good teacher makes a good student and I strive to be that good teacher and student.

More About This Tutor...

I am a recent graduate of two degrees, a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Edward Waters College and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Florida A&M University. I was able to obtain both degrees under a Dual Degree Program that was arranged between the two institutions. Throughout the completion of my degrees, I tutored college students in various math areas (College Algebra, Trig, Linear Algebra, etc). The organization I tutored under was called "TRIO (Student Academic Support)” I even had personal tutor jobs on the side (ages 6 on up).
I have a knack of finding where the weakness is in a student and I try my best to help improve it. Communication and patience are some of my greatest assets. Motivation and continuous encouragement is what I provide to each student I tutor. The goal is to make the student comfortable with each problem and make sure they have ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Since every student learns differently, I spend time getting to know their style and have found success in the past using several examples of problems, asking leading questions, and being prepared to answer any question or go over a topic in more detail. When it comes down to it, I emphasize that a tutoring session is not for me to become a better tutor, but the style and material of the session should be chosen by the student. This means that I come with a variety of options and am prepared to switch the plan as soon as asked. My goal when working with a student is to give them more confidence in the subject and to see improvement each session and overall.
During my four years at Notre Dame, I majored in mathematics and gained alot of experience in various areas of math. In addition, Notre Dame requires everyone to take a broad range of subjects for general credit and so I have le ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Although my bachelor's degree is in psychology, my interests throughout my education have been to study children; how they learn, how they think, and what I can do to help them better themselves. Because of this interest, I have tutored children for a couple of years some years back, and was recognized for my efforts. I have excelled in mathematics, English, and psychology, and love to pass this knowledge on to others. I also have three cousins who have come to the United States from Taiwan to learn and I have spent an extensive amount of time teaching them ESL.
My teaching style is mostly form-fitted to each child. I assess what level they are at, how quickly they learn, and what areas they need help in or should strengthen. I cannot stress the importance of patience when it comes to tutoring children, which I have an abundance of, having taught various ages. Also, having stud ... read more
