My name is Briana and my college major is Elementary Education with endorsements in ESOL and Reading. At the University of West Florida I have maintained a 3.6 GPA and have been on the Dean’s List and the President’s List. This is an important achievement. However, I do not take this to be my greatest asset. It is my belief that my love for children and desire to see them learn, even as I increase my knowledge, is of greater value. During my college career I have made myself available to volunteer outside the classroom. I have worked in schools, science fairs, church schools, and other organizations. My involvement in a Tutor/Mentor program at an international high school was an experience that was invaluable. What I learned is that education becomes a form of symbiosis. While I taught students how to peer review drafts, articulate ideas, pronounce words, read books; they actually taught me little bit about my own customs, values and beliefs, being an ‘American’ student. It is through teaching others that I learned how I taught myself. As a result of this epiphany, I am propelled to make a career out of a similar role, the role I had as a tutor, mentor, role model, and friend.
