More About This Tutor...

After completing my biology and chemistry degree, I volunteered for 18 months in impoverished areas in California. Following this I decided to start teaching. While at Utah State University I completed both a Masters program and a second undergraduate program simultaneously. I am currently licensed to teach high school science. However, I have also spent time teaching science classes to elementary grades (3-6). During and after my college experience I was involved in the peer tutoring process for various levels of learners within the biology program. I have worked instructing and proctoring college biology, chemistry, and anatomy laboratories.
My teaching style is highly student focused. Instead of providing only textbook reading and writing my classroom focuses on having the students work hands on to create models of the systems they are learning so they can develop their own unde ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Following my graduation from UHH, I was a substitute teacher and tutor for ESL students for 5 months. I have worked students coming from all types of backgrounds. Recently, I have begun substitute teaching again and have been for an additional 4 months. I enjoy working with the students and seeing them excel.
I enjoy giving the students individual attention. I noticed that often students are ashamed to ask for help or ask questions in front of the class. It is important to walk around the classroom and ask students how they are doing and if they understand the concepts. Many times it only then will a student accept help. Students have a wide range of learning styles. It is important to remember that when helping students. I like to break down a lesson into simpler ideas so it is easier to learn.

This is important stuff to learn, so I like to give an overview with specific examples on how this will apply in their everyday life. Then we go over the basics. My goal is to get the student to have a strong understanding of the material.
I have been teaching and tutoring people in computer usage for over 20 years now. I also used to teach computer programming in the mid 80's. I have a good understanding of mathematics and physics.

As a team lead I have mentored and taught younger team members for over 10 years in computer programming, planning, statistical analysis, budgeting, and mathematical computations. I have also taught them how to debug problems, test solutions, and how to successfully complete their tasks. I have over 20 years experience in a variety of fields such as Defense Industry (Department of Navy), Space Systems (Atlas V lauch vehicle), and commercial (Lockheed-Martin).
My teaching/mentoring/tutoring style is tailored to the student. I do not believe their is a generic teaching style that will help all students. Most people I have worked with have difficulty understanding a couple of key points and once that obstacle is overcome learning accelerates until the next obstacle is reached. I strongly believe the tutor needs to learn from the student as well to successfully teach.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always known that I wanted to work with children and for the past 11 years, I have worked with children in various settings. I love teaching and enjoy seeing the light go on when something is learned! I am capable of delivering concepts in many different ways according to students' learning styles. I believe that teachers are capable of touching and changing lives. My goal is to be able to make a difference in my students' beliefs and lives. I believe that all students are capable of learning, they simply have to be engaged and given a reason to WANT to learn.

I have earned two bachelor degrees which has given me the chance to motivate other youths and kids to seek the world and don't let it end with High school. There is more to life. Granting that Education is the key to success and without education there will be no sense of direction.
I love working with kids. I believe that the kids are our future and if we adults don't help them grow up to be leaders and make better choices in their lives we will not have any sense of direction.

More About This Tutor...

In 2003 I traveled to India where I began work in a village in the South teaching English and Sociology to 4-11th graders. The experience was incredibly rewarding and was a wonderful vision into the complexities of education and culture. Due to this multi cultural experience I feel that I have a great skill in reaching students with multi ethnic backgrounds, and understand the discrepencies between written and spoken language.
I feel that in teaching my goal is to effectively reach all children. Individual care and attention are the most effective ways which I feel a child can be persuaded to learn. I take pride in being patient and think that every child has brilliance to show, they just show their skills at different and varying degrees.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have tutored a handful of high school students in English and Mathematics. My personality in my social life is outgoing, friendly, and talkative. My tutoring style is no different. In my own schooling experience, I've found that I learn quicker and most efficiently when the person teaching me is more of a friend than a superior. The students I've tutored looked at me as a peer who could help them with their studies as opposed to a teacher. I whole heartedly believe that a comfortable and friendly atmosphere is the key to successful learning. There is no rule that states the sticking to the task at hand and getting work done should be completely empty of enjoyment. "We'll get things done while having some fun." That's my motto.
Having graduated from the University of Hawaii at Hilo with a degree in English, I am eager to put my newly certified expertise to use. I've become skilled ... read more

My career in education began while attending CSUN. I started as a paraprofessional at a charter school, and also was able to teach my own elective classes. I graduated with a BA in Deaf Studies, with a concentration in Language and Culture. After moving to northern California, I worked at a college as an ASL interpreter. I went on to teach ASL at a private High School in San Francisco for 3 years. I am currently teaching Deaf students at the high school level. My educational background and specialty is primarily Deaf Ed. and ASL, however, I have a well-rounded knowledge of various subjects that I have used in education over the last 6 years.
My passion is to teach and work with students of all levels and ages. Being and ASL teacher I must be dynamic and engaging as the instructor. From my experience I have learned different ways to interact with students to keep them interest ... read more

There are no bad students, there are bad teachers. Once I had an argument with my University teacher who wanted us to prepare an exercise but did nothing to get our interest in it. I argued because his words were: “It is my job to get your interest to learn” But in that case he didn’t follow his principle at all. I won an argument and he cancelled the task. Other thing I would never bring to my students is the attitude of being Superior. It doesn’t help if you want to make a contact with your student. Everybody learns in their own ways so a Teacher supposes to find a right way to present information and get the interest.

A Little Bit About Me...

I actually think I have tutored statistics at UCLA but cannot remember clearly - much of my tutoring has been in bits and pieces and volunteer or related to class work. In 2002 I taught a semester at Art Institute of California | San Diego. I wrote my own curriculum and taught four different classes in computer graphics (Adobe, Quark, Etc.) I tutored students after class hours. Other tutoring: I tutored Chemistry and English to ESL students in High School. I taught work skills (one on one) to the developmentally disabled (as part of a UCLA's Developmental Disabilities Immersion Project). My UCLA degree was slanted toward Psychometrics and Methodology and I did graduate level statistics at UCLA. I taught and tutored computer skills at American Express to the office staffs. In Hawaii I tutored my Hanai niece in mathematics. Currently I am saddled at the realty office as the "computer guy ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Much of my teaching style I learned while at Apple Computer in one on one computer teaching sessions. I tend to be a very enthusiastic and encouraging anyway, but Apple taught me an additional patience and a lead-learning-out teaching style that promotes self-discovery and avoids simply giving answers. Though it is geared towards adults, I have since found that adapting the patent and deliberate pace of LLO teaching to the learning level of younger children is effective and fun for both myself and the student. To be less specific, I was born to teach. I have fun doing it, and my goal is that my students have even more fun learning than I do teaching.
Though I received my degree last June, most of my teaching experience came while I was still learning. In high school, I worked as a museum docent for after-school programs - at one point trying to convince 3rd graders that M.C. Esche ... read more
