UNR Grad and Experienced University Tutor working toward CPA

Honestly, not sure how to answer this. I think the entire benefit of working with a private tutor is that the tutor is able to change and adapt to complement the student. I wouldn't think to walk into a room and presume to know where the student is struggling or how best to help him. What I do consistently is to focus on basics and use colors, organization and logic to solve problems. Too often, people memorize the steps without understanding where they come from, this leaves them high and dry if theres any chance of test anxiety or a "curveball" question.

The key to success in any field is overcoming fear. I used to have a fear of some classes, until I decided I was going to face my fears and tackle the subjects. I can break down long problems and concepts into smaller components that are easier to understand. Math or science can be broken down into baby steps or bite size pieces. I work to make the subject as simple and logical to the student so they can master the subject. My goal is not to simply hand out fish, but to teach them how to catch their own fish.

I believe all students can achieve success given the right learning experience and motivation. I appreciate that there are several methods through which students learn, and I believe the key to effective teaching is to find the right method for each student. There are many ways to explain any subject. If one explanation does not make sense, it is usually possible to find another way to say, write, draw or demonstrate the same idea. I am very patient and considerate of students’ needs, and I try to be as sensitive as possible to the learning style of each student. My goal is to provide the most educational experience possible by finding the learning style that works best for each student and by allowing them to learn through discovery.

I am an extrovert, personable, intelligent, and am not limited to one specific style of teaching. Moreover, having an extensive background in sports(collegiate athlete/captain), I have developed and improved a critical attribute which allows me to personalize my teaching/instruction style based on understanding/knowing how various individuals think. Overall, I want to make an impact by allowing other students to have the opportunity to receive a strong education provided by individuals that care.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have had the wonderful pleasure of teaching children for quite some time. Just as I do, each child learns in their own way. I work to find examples from my own educational experiences that will show them that I empathize with their need as well as to help that light bulb go on for them. It is wonderfully fulfilling to see that happen. I have also had the privilege of being married to a piano teacher who teaches one on one and to learn from him and his teaching styles suited to each individual student.
The setting as a Sunday school teacher is different than the usual classroom experience. However, the parents and elders expect results and it is very satisfying to see the children respond with good answers and, especially, with good questions for me. I have learned so very much from my students. I have taught and encouraged little ones from toddlers to 12 years of age, both ... read more

During my time spent as a tutor/teacher I learned that I enjoy helping others acheive academic success. Tutoring subjects can sometimes be challenging because each tutoring session may vary. So, I have learned that, in order to be a good tutor and to have a productive tutoring session, preperation and promptness is always crucial. I understand that learning styles and techniques varies from individual to individual. Thus, having an open-mind is always important in order to accomadate for these variations. I think I am a great tutor becau ... read more

I am a parent and I understand that educating our children is a priority. Although challenging, I particularly enjoy working with children, teaching them as well as learning from them. I believe that what makes me a good teacher is my ability to listen, understand a child's outlook on things and my constant focus on challenging traditional teaching styles. I am a believer in visualizing the everyday subject, and I always give memorable examples related to our learning material. Also, I understand that every child's capabilities are different and it is only a matter of adapting to their level of understanding and providing a constructive approach. I like to involve all students in classroom activities, delegate tasks and reward good results. I also share personal experiences from my academic and professional career. I work with students from age 2 to 82, and with all origins, cultures, and orientations. I specialize in using mental triggers to help in effective understanding and information retrieval (e.g., moving cookies on a table to demo electrical charge). I also teach with analogies to real world scenarios, using sources from around the world, and throughout history. Some problems have more than one root course, and some have coupled interactions that are difficult to isolate. I will also point out where there is more than one solution to a given problem, where management often gets to choose, based on a tradeoff between budget and warranty.

The best job I ever had was tutoring math at a learning center. I found it so rewarding to watch my students learn and enjoy their time learning with me. Although I did not have a teaching certificate or a degree at the time the director of the center knew I was extremely proficient in math and had a professional and patient demeanor. Now that I have graduated with a Business Administration Degree with a finance major and economics minor I feel I am more than qualified to continue tutoring students in math. My best experiences with teaching were improving my student's grades and levels of math.
I was raised in a home where education was a priority and my mom religiously practiced flash cards and read with us. I believe anyone can learn given the time to practice and someone to encourage them and push them in a consistently patient and loving way. I believe it is education and ... read more
