Volunteered in the school system all the years my daughter was going. Taught Sunday school with a variety of children, also taught Bible school

A Little Bit About Me...

In addition to tutoring children and helping those I babysat with homework, I also taught horseback riding lessons to young children for three years. I have a very laid back and encouraging style of teaching and am patient in my endeavors. My hope is to give my students the confidence to try and succeed beyond their own expectations.
I recently obtained my BS in Marketing along with a minor in Animal Science from Iowa State University. I was very involved with volunteer activities as a high school student, one of which involved tutoring elementary age children in the areas of reading and writing. I graduated from the University of Iowa in 1989. My degree is in Elementary Education with an emphasis in reading. I taught in the same school district for 20 years where I gained experience teaching first, second, third and sixth grade. I am currently employed as the Elementary Student Advisor with the school district that my previous school district recently merged with. Children all learn different, which is why I believe in using direct instruction in guiding their learning. Some children are more visual learns, while others may be more auditory. Varying the levels of teaching can allow for each child's needs to be met. I feel that I am able to adapt and change what I need to teach to meet those needs. I also believe scaffolding is a key component in guiding the way a child is able to learn. Along with scaffolding, providing the experiences and opportunities for a child is very important in helping them to reach their full potential.
