As everyone else touts, I can also relate to young adults. My method is simple and effective. I solve problems with my students. As I solve problems I explain the underlying concept/strategy/trick behind the problem. After explaining all the concepts my students and I go through as many problems as possible. I tweak their approach, and if necessary explain again the necessary concept. There is a lot of drilling involved. My "teaching style" changes depending on the needs of my students. In all cases, an initial assessment of both the academic level and the temperament of each student are necessary before I establish a particular style. Some students are comfortable with a quieter, more formal tutor, while others are successful with a more casual, animated tutor. In every situation, I look for opportunities to give positive reinforcement. For example, I usually warm-up with material the student feels relatively confident about, then add new or more challenging concepts, and end with the student feeling successful practicing on his or her own.
