Effective, caring tutoring from an experienced tutor

I summarize my approach to tutoring with "3 E's": Enthusiasm, Engagement, and Encouragement. I try hard to make each session fun and to engage the student in seeking the solution, rather than just teaching him or her a method.
I have been tutoring in math since I was in Jr High. Initially my students were sisters and brothers, then nephews and nieces, and finally I began tutoring as a second career. My background includes 30 years as an engineer and engineering manager, as well as teaching math at the community college level and volunteering as an adult literacy tutor. I love applying math to real world problems, and I do my best to come up with pertinent examples to help a student learn a new concept.

Friendly and engaging. Focus is on comprehension of the material rather than just completing the homework.
While I was in high school, I took honors courses and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. I tutored an 8th grade-9th grade boy in TCAPS preparation and helped him complete homework in Math (pre-algebra, algebra, and pre-geometry), Science (biology), and English. I tutored him for two years. After I graduated high school I was accepted to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where I am currently in the spring semester of my sophomore year. I will be returning to Johnson City this summer and am available to tutor. I have taught all ages and levels from preschool through community college. I have enjoyed working with students at all ability levels. I was a peer tutor as early as elementary school. I have taught mathematics at the elementary, middle school, high school, and community college levels. I have helped the top students excel and push ahead of the class, and helped the bottom students gain proficiency in the subject matter at hand. As a tutor I have met students and peers on their level and helped them learn material beyond performance on one assessment.
