In 1995, I began my official tutoring odyssey by assisting my classmates in AP Calculus. Every day during lunch I spent my half-hour helping my fellow high school seniors succeed, ultimately achieving a 4/5 on the AP exam and guiding others to similar grades. Since those days I have tutored in-home and taught mathematics at the private secondary school level, fostering student knowledge of various concepts from arithmetic to calculus. My degree, my passion, is mathematics.
My students often say I can’t be a teacher because they “just get it" when I explain. Even so, my degree is in math and I've taught professionally and privately. I have a history of maintaining high scores and would rather show why something works than how to follow steps. I don't expect students to love math or do it "my way" but I want students to know math isn't scary. To this end, I explain every step, do ass ... read more

I believe anyone can teach a subject, having enough knowledge of a subject allows one to pass it on. However, I feel what many teachers do not do is teach students how to learn. It is in my belief that teaching students to learn enables them to think independently allowing them to become more creative rather than repetitive. So not only do I teach students the subject, I teach them how to learn and apply it to every other subject.
As a accomplished student, I realized I always had help along the help with achieving academic success. From teachers and counselors to my peers and older students. I began to help other with academics as early as the third grade, however I began to commit to tutoring in High School and continue it through-out college, in hopes to eventually becoming a teacher in the future.

As a recent college graduate with a BA in Spanish and a BA in International Affairs, I possess current experiences from my studies in the United States, Europe and South America. Mixed with my superior Spanish skills I am able to discuss and explain political differences in Spanish and explain, on a historical level, how government has evolved internationally. As a past member of the Sacramento Jazz Society I also have a strong background in music both in practice and theory. Since high school, I have tutored others in Spanish, government, music and sports.

In my past work experience in law enforcement and the military I came to understand the necessity of possessing good writing skills. I have earned a BA in English which has enabled me to not only improve my own writing skills, but to learn the elements of good writing in order to teach them to others. I have been teaching at the college level for almost two years and one of those years has been teaching college composition.
I absolutely love teaching and thrive on the interaction with my students. I approach teaching on a personal level by relating individually to my students. I make the effort to learn what each student needs as far as learning style and interaction and try to approach each student in that manner. I believe all students are capable of great success with the proper encouragement. The challenge for an educator is to determine the proper encouragement for each ... read more

I taught for twenty five years at the middle school level mostly in a self contained sixth grade classroom. In addition to teaching reading, English, math, science, and social studies, I taught electives is video filming and remedial reading. In my experience as a teacher, I discovered that all students can learn if they are properly motivated. I found that I could best motivate a student if I found what they were interested in, and what grade level they were working at. I also worked for five years as a substitute teacher.
I believe in individualized teaching. In my sixth grade classroom, I individualized instruction wherever possible. In reading I tested my students and placed them in books at their reading level. I had them write reading summaries and corrected their first drafts. In sixth weeks, I retested and in most instances moved students to a higher level. In my ma ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout my life, I have always felt very strong about achieving a high level of education. As a older sibling to a child that had a learning disability, I felt it was my responsiblity to help him achieve a high school diploma. From the age of six years old to his senior year in high school, I tutored my brother in all subjects, from math and english to electives. From this experience, I was able to help other children improve their level of education as well.
I enjoy teaching and helping all children. I am a strong believer that all children can be taught all subjects, and should be given the opportunity to do just that. I am always willing to teach the child, in the best way that will help them, whether this be through explanation, or through a hands on approach. Children are our future, and should be given the opportunities to learn.
