My comments on tutoring Poetry : I have a background in poetry.

I am an educator and a writer. I have online and ground classroom college teaching experience. Currently, I write web content for iParadigms, a company that developed plagiarism detection software. I recently developed the web content for their online writing center. I also write an adult education column for Examiner.com.
My teaching style is learner-centered. I interview the student to find out how they learn best.

A Little Bit About Me...

I hold a bachelor's degree in English writing and possess extensive teaching experience as I have taught every summer since I was an undergraduate. Most recently, I instructed creative writing with the Western Pennsylvania Writing Project through the Young Writers Institute where I taught creative writing workshops at the Cathedral of Learning to middle school students. I have also taught art and writing classes through the Community Arts Center of Cambria County and the Greater Johnstown school district for after-school and summer-school programming. I have been working as a private writing tutor for about two years and primarily teach essay writing, creative writing and reading comprehension. As an instructor of writing, my primary goal is to motivate students to uncover the benefits and the value of the practice. I believe that every student is able to be inspired by the act of wr ... read more

As a person who is both respectful and fond of the English language, I feel that I have an advantage in opening lines of communication with students. Because my area of expertise is language, I find it easy to express myself in a way that a student would understand. An important aspect of teaching is not only expressing oneself eloquently, however; it is also vital to be a good listener. This is something I pride myself on. If a teacher cannot understand what a student finds to be confusing, then the teacher cannot accurately solve a problem. I believe all students are capable of learning, as long as the information is provided to them in a way that they can relate to and understand.
I feel very comfortable dealing with the technical side of the English language--that is, the grammatical side. I am also quite comfortable discussing theme, characters, and various plot devices i ... read more

This particular position interests me because I struggled with math through middle school and understand the frustration it can create for a student. Mathematics is now my strongest subject and I chose the profession of accounting to utilize those strengths. During my time at college, I helped other students with their studies in math and business, specifically statistics and quantitative analysis. Although this teaching experience was with college level students, I have held a summer job working with 8-12 year olds for the past four years. When I finish my Master’s Degree, I may consider teaching at an institution such as CCAC because I enjoy helping others with their education.
As a result of my post-high school studies in mathematics and business, I feel I'm suited to tutor people in those subjects. Statistics, quantitative methods, and analytical methods are my strongest s ... read more

My favorite aspect of coaching, teaching, and tutoring is the personal connection I build with my students. As a student, I did not adapt well to traditional educational settings, and so I seek to create a nontraditional environment for my students that involves kinetic, visual, and auditory stimulation. Finding my student's motivation to learn is key to my success as a teacher. I strive to make each learning experience new and meaningful. However, perfect practice makes perfect, and repetition is an important aspect of turning new material into "old hat."
I began my study of American Sign Language (ASL) at the tender age of 12, then studied Latin in high school with Mrs. Ellen Conrad. When I reached college, I continued my study of ASL while tutoring friends in Latin. I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself.
I have been selected as a peer tutor through Carlow University for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
