A Little Bit About Me...

It is important for a teacher to be able to mold their instruction to fit different individuals. It is this student diversity that makes tutoring such a valuable practice at the secondary level. No two students learn in the same way or at the same speed. I value being able to focus on one student at time so that I can discover how to best facilitate the transfer of knowledge and help that student to 'learn how to learn' by applying individualized learning techniques. Often, I can best begin to reach the student by identifying their personal interest, and using these interests as themes for homework examples. Being able to apply their lessons to their own lives is an essential learning tool.

I enjoy teaching all age groups. I especially like working with High School students.Initially, they can be quite a challenge to work with, but once they are engaged they are fully immersed in the topic! I like to be creative and interactive! I was a difficult High School student so I can relate to many that get bored with some topics. I really like to use transactional teaching methods. I introduce a subject and have discussions about the material rather than strictly lecturing.I like to learn what the student can teach me after assigned a reading. Have them go in the front of the room and explain a portion of the reading. It also helps them develop confidence in their public speaking.

As a double major in Economics and Sociology I gained extensive experience with both mathematics as well as writing and oral presentations. In my final semester I enrolled in two graduate level classes and despite the difficulty of my class schedule worked even harder to achieve a 4.0 GPA for that semester. The combination of Economics and Sociology has provided a unique opportunity for me to develop my ability to understand complicated mathematical theories and equations and explain them in both written and oral forms. I attended Heritage University for 3.5 years in pursuit of my Nursing degree. I have taken College math, written many college papers, and studied alot of science along the way. I also cordinated a mentor program through YVCC for almost two years. I have recently changed paths and with obtain my BA in criminal justice in less than a year. I changed paths after the sudden death of my mother just over a year ago.
