My style of teaching mathematics, science and Japanese is PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. It is only through solving problems (for mathematics and science) and practice (for Japanese) that this knowledge becomes ingrained in a student so that they are confident to move forward.

My teaching style is really one of encouragement, love, belief, knowledge, honesty and respect. I believe that children need to know that you are truely concerned for them before they really want to know how much knowledge you can dispense to them. As an elementary student in the 4th grade I had a reading deficiency and was reading on a 1st grade level. It my parents and tutors that gave the encouragement to continue trying and the self-esteem to know that I could do it. I try to keep the material fresh and I avoid boredom and repetition at all costs. One of my best tools to connect with a young person is through humor. If the student feels relaxed they are more likely to absorb the information. I also use reverse psychology to turn the tables so they actually find themselves teaching me the material. This has been a successful tool with children I have mentored as well as my own children.
I began teaching/tutoring while in graduate school. I tutored undergrads in sociology, psychology, and social statistics. I also taught driver's education to high school students while in grad school. After ten years working in law enforcement, I switched to social services and I have been mentoring children in foster care for the past twenty years.
