The beginning of everything, I've got three younger sisters and there has always been a fair amount of helping out where they're concerned. I've babysat since I was twelve and for the past few years I've worked as a nanny. It's not exactly what you would expect for a tutor but I've been offering homework help in those areas for many years.

My comments on tutoring Elementary Social Studies : I am in the process of becoming an elementary school teacher, therefore I am familiar with the lesson plans within K-5th grade.

I would say my teaching style is really focused on the student and what they need. In school I was an average student never getting lower than a C or higher than in an A. So I really want to focus on listening to the student, especially because they probably are not heard at school. I want to make each subject interesting to the student, whether that means going out and playing basketball or chess or candy or anything the student absolutely loves. I want to attach each subject to a good memory, I don't want to pressure them or push them to just memorize facts that I know they will probably forget after they are tested. From my own personal experience I want any student I tutor to turn around and actually enjoy learning about a subject they are having trouble with.

I am patient, have a good sense of humor, and strive to help students achieve to their ability. I have great faith in children's ability to develop proficiency in any content as long as they have adequate support. One size does not fit all in education and I use differentiation and different teaching modalities, with a lot of realia and manipulatives, to meet the students' learning styles and preferences, and the content area. I rely on colleagues for assistance when I am unable to fully help a child.
As an Adult Education teacher I taught learners from High School age through 70 year-olds. I taught office occupations; ESL; and GED, ABS, HS diploma and citizenship. Since I have worked students with a wide variety of learning issues; I feel that I am well prepared to assess and deliver educational materials and instruction to any student. I understand that each student has his learning style and prefers specific modalities such as: games & puzzles, logical sequential, the arts, naturalistic, etc. Although those would not be the only modalities I would use to educate my students, I feel that I must acknowledge this and respond with a portion of the lessons directed at personal interest. Also, the student's learning environment is important. My students are the recipients of a positive climate where tangible rewards/awards are delivered along with praise, emotional support and encouragement.

My Teaching Style is to build a relationship with the student and their family. That is based on trust, confidence and a great deal of praise. Everyones performance is driven by the encouragement that they get on a daily basis. So a very important part of my teaching style is to include the whole family. As well as to encourage them to praise my student daily. Also they must provide activities that challenge their mind and build there confidence. This allows everyone to be a part of their success. For example: If they are working on reading skills. They must allow the child to read to them nightly.
I love to tutor because it gives me an opportunity to help students build their skills and to teach them that they have the ability to learn anything, they want to learn and are willing to put their mind, determination and dedication into. I really like working with all sorts of people. There is no satisfaction greater than when I can see the spark in a person's eye when they comprehend materials they had not before. Everyone can learn any material they set their mind to if they have the motivation and the proper learning environment, and of course the right teacher. It is my desire to be a great teacher, educator, and mentor.
As a recent graduate from the University of California Riverside, I have earned a bachelors of science degree from the institution. During my time at UCR I developed a passion for the sciences which was taught by dedicated professors who served as my mentors. After being exposed to many professors who have a passion for teaching, I want to also give back to the community in this way.
